Talk35 Improving Hydrological Modelling in the Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalayas Basins

Millions of people rely on river water originating from snow and ice-melt from basins in the Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalayas (HKH), including the Upper Indus Basin. Being the origin of some of the world's largest alpine glaciers, this basin could be highly susceptible to global warming and climate change. Precise predictions of future water availability for resource planning under a changing climate depends on significantly improved hydrological modelling, and is vital for the food and energy needs of downstream population. LEAD Pakistan is hosting an interactive session on Improving Hydrological Modelling in the Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalayas Basins as part of its series on Managing Shared Basins. The guest speaker, Dr. Asif Khan, will be highlighting the major drawbacks of the current hydro-climatic studies of this region and recommendations for increasing their precision. Hydrological modelling has not received due attention in the HKH region and this talk will focus on revisiting it so that the improved forecasts can be used in policy making or to inform water resource development.

Dr. Asif Khan has more than thirteen years of professional field and research experience and his expertise are snow-glacier hydro-climate modelling, Multi Hazard Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (MHVRA), Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA), Water Resources and Project Management. He is currently working as Lead Author for IPCC AR-6 and as the Water and Climate Change expert with ADB and other well reputed organizations. Dr. Khan has carried out research on Water-Energy-Food Nexus under climate change for the Indus Basin during his Post-Doc at IIASA, Austria, and secured his PhD degree in the field of hydro-climatology from Cambridge University UK.
