Case Studies

LEAD Pakistan’s case studies fall into three broad categories;

1.      Case Studies on Fundraising

Investing in Ourselves: Giving and Fundraising in Pakistan was part of a seven-country research project spearheaded by the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium (APPC), and was funded by the Asian Development Bank, through the Asia Foundation, Nippon Foundation, and United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Investing in Ourselves: Giving and Fundraising in Pakistan highlights the strategies and fundraising principles used by the NGOs and fundraising practitioners in Pakistan through a series of 15 case studies.  These case studies also provide an insight into the change in the nature of giving in Pakistan over the past century.

 2.      Case Studies on Governance

The Essential Institutional Reforms Operationalisation Programme (EIROP) was a joint venture of the Government of NWFP, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to promote good governance, institutional reforms, and capacity building of state functionaries, public representatives, and civil society through a gender-sensitive and participatory approach. This project was then commissioned to LEAD Pakistan with seven years of experience in conducting trainings by EIROP.  These case studies were designed to introduce twenty-four Nazims, twenty-four Naib Nazims, and twenty-four District Coordinating Officers (DCOs) from the NWFP to exemplary cases of successful development and devolution processes.

3.      Case Studies on Fellows Initiatives

LEAD has been offering leadership and environment related training to mid-career professionals since 1991. The main objective of the training is to create and sustain a global network of leaders who are committed to promoting patterns of economic development that are environmentally friendly and socially equitable. LEAD has nearly 2000 Fellows and Associates from more than 80 countries through its 14 national and regional member programs. However there has been no comprehensive assessment of the potential of the LEAD program to produce Fellows, who initiate and participate in innovative initiatives, institutions, and solutions that have contributed to the creation of a sustainable society. To address this increasingly important issue of impact assessment, LEAD Pakistan proposed a project to develop a series of case studies on development projects initiated by LEAD Fellows and their impact on the local community and all other stakeholders. These case studies are based on interviews with LEAD Fellows who have initiated or participated in innovative projects addressing issues of global concern in a local context.

While researching these case studies the LEAD-Pakistan case study team is careful to choose those cases which are most promising in terms of learning and which have the full support of the organization(s) involved. All case studies are printed with the final approval of the organization(s) profiled.  In this regard LEAD has been quite fortunate in enlisting the support of a number of NGOs and corporations who are willing to share their experiences and have these documented for teaching purposes.

Although primarily developed for teaching purposes the case studies developed by LEAD Pakistan are also abridged and published for general readership in accordance with LEAD Pakistan’s commitment to raising awareness on issues relevant to sustainable development.

The case study unit also partners with research and training organizations across the world to share its research integrate efforts and develop valuable partnerships for training and research. For example the case studies on environment and sustainable development are being summarized to be presented at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002 on the request of the Government of Pakistan.

Furthermore we have also partnered with LEAD-International and the Venture for Fund Raising to conduct two training workshops on corporate social responsibility as well as a specialized 5 day workshop on the mechanics of fund raising for 52 participants from 30 NGOs across Pakistan. This mix of international trainers and indigenously researched cases has been very well received and there are several other partnerships being currently pursued with research, training and case study focused organizations and projects.
