Objectives

Climate change is real and it is already happening across our urban centres, coastlines and deltas. To analyze the impacts of the climate change on the environment in the developing countries, a five day conference on "Climate Change: Adaptation Challenges in OIC Countries" was organized by LEAD Pakistan in collaboration with COMSTECH, Islamabad from June 30th - July 5th, 2008.  The conference served as a platform where international and national experts shared their concerns over the challenges that are emerging due to rapid climate change. The conference gathered policy-makers, public and private sector professionals, activists and students from all OIC member countries. The sessions were delivered by a mix of renowned national and international faculty having expertise of climate change research and adaptation planning. International participants were provided ample opportunities to share country-specific issues, challenges and responses. The conference revolved around the following objectives:

  • Providing in-depth knowledge of multi-lateral environmental agreements (MEAs);

  • Deepening the understanding of climate change in a broad sustainable development and political economy context;

  • Identifying specific Climate Change challenges, issues and opportunities faced by the OIC members

  • Analysing possible adaptation and mitigation strategies
