Leadership and Climate Change: Impacts, Innovations and Interdependence

LEAD’s Cohort 14 visits China

A group of seven eminent leaders of the recently selected  LEAD’s Cohort 14 visited China to participate in the International Session held in Beijing from 8th – 14th November where about 150 Associates from other LEAD member programs (from 50 or so countries) were also present.

The international session’s primary objective was to provide the emerging leaders with action-oriented learning on key areas of climate change using Beijing as a case study. The learning journey was covered by discussing the theme of climate change under four thematic areas: Adaptation, Green Technology & Urban Living, Business & Climate Change and the Energy mix of the Future. The participants during their weeklong visit attended thematic panels, exposure visits and a networking fair.

In addition to the session’s central theme, the international session also provided the participants an opportunity to have a closer look at how other LEAD member programs work. It was a chance for experiential and comparative learning on how the Leadership Development Program in other LEAD Member Programs has evolved.

Future of Energy and Climate Change

Energy is a topic which is introduced to us very early in our lives probably in our text books of class 3 or 4, but unfortunately we tend to forget things in our text books. No work is possible unless energy is used; the world is handicapped without it. Consequently, energy security is a huge concern for countries like Pakistan, India or even China, America or Europe. It is required absolutely every where for example in Industries, households, for running cars or for jet engines.
There are different forms of energy for instance, oil, and gas.coal collectively known as fossil fuel. The fossil fuels are thought to be formed by the decay of dead bodies of prehistoric plants and animals that inhabited the earth millions of years ago. Anyway that’s a long story it’s more important to know that it can not be replaced once it’s gone. The nature once provided us with great reservoirs of energy. Therefore it was our responsibility to use it carefully and save for the coming generations.

Citizens report on reproductive health issues in
Khairpur and Lodhran

Enabling Effective District Leadership for Reproductive Health (LRH) in Pakistan was LEAD-Pakistan’s project that aimed at addressing the outstanding gaps in reproductive health by developing and enabling the leadership capacity of a cadre of key multi-sectoral stakeholders in the districts of Khairpur and Lodhran.
The twenty-four month project has trained 2 cohorts of seventeen mid- to senior-level professionals on RH issues, leadership, strategic planning, management, monitoring, and social mobilization.
To influence the district RH decisions and policies, the cohort members with the help of local communities have prepared districts Citizens’ Reports. The Citizens’ Reports have come up with recommendations ranging from initiatives in awareness, education, poverty alleviation & infrastructure development to the availability of data on RH indicators & trained human resources. Both the Citizen Reports are suggesting initiatives which would require some reflections on the policy by involving a wide range of stakeholders.
To generate a dialogue on how the new and different mechanisms can work towards the improvement of LRH, an engagement plan is being devised. This engagement plan will make an attempt to involve stakeholders on all the possible administrative tiers i.e. community, district, provincial and federal.
