Getting Climate Smart for Disasters

The theme of this project is “getting smart to reduce disaster risk and thus adapting to climate change and build resilient development.” Inherent in this is the need to understand and justify the value of increasing the overlap between disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA).
This is to achieve a form of development that is resilient to both hazard shocks and all types of impacts of climate change.
The Objective of this project is to research the institutional barriers and opportunities for enabling action towards achieving convergence of DRR and CCA across varying scales - in the context of development, poverty and vulnerability reduction.
The general outcome was enhanced capacity of the relevant institutions to understand the relations between work on DRR, climate change and development.
For example, as a result of the engagement with the project, SWAD (a small NGO in Odisha working for women empowerment) recognised that co-benefits of adaptation to climate change could be easily integrated within their work.
