Curriculum

Six modules are taught during the national training sessions, including one orientation module. The themes of the other five are ecology and environment; economy and trade; energy and technology; human settlements; and resource use. The precise subject and focus of each module varies for every cohort, which means that LEAD Pakistan creates and conducts new modules every time and is gradually developing a very rich information and analysis base on development issues in Pakistan.

The themes of regional and international training sessions are broader and aim to encourage Associates to look at development issues from a global perspective. These sessions are conducted by different LEAD Member Programs in collaboration with LEAD International, Inc. LEAD Pakistan has had the privilege of hosting a regional as well as an international training session, both of which were extremely well-received by the international LEAD community.

The broad contents of the six national training session modules conducted by LEAD Pakistan are outlined below.

Orientation Training Session

The orientation training session is designed as an introduction to the LEAD program and its proposed curriculum. It provides an opportunity to the newly selected Associates to acquaint themselves with each other, LEAD staff, the program philosophy, the curriculum, code of conduct, and policies and guidelines. Preliminary training modules on team-building and leadership are delivered, to be built upon in later sessions, and the basic concepts of ecology, energy and economics are introduced. The session lays the foundation for future sessions by enabling Associates to start thinking holistically, and to move beyond a simple awareness of current environmental problems to becoming active promoters of sustainable solutions.

Ecology and Environment

The primary objective of the module on ecology and environment is to provide Associates basic knowledge of principles governing ecology, which is instrumental in understanding concepts like pollution, acid rain, desertification, and extinction of species. The session serves to highlight the biodiversity resource potential of Pakistan, and provides a basis for understanding interrelated scientific principles regarding matter, energy and environment, and their links with society. Common features that apply to all ecosystems, whether aquatic, terrestrial, natural or man-made, and basic natural cycles of air, water and soil, are discussed. This allows the Associates to assimilate the fundamental properties, composition and functions of natural resources. Similarly, the biosphere and its components as well as the carbon, nitrogen, water and phosphorous cycles are explained in detail. The fact that everything present in the ecosystem, such as water, insects, plants, and air is interrelated, and that removal of any one species causes the whole ecosystem to suffer, is explained, and environmental concerns such as ozone depletion and climate change are highlighted.

Economy and Trade

This module aims to clarify concepts of trade and globalization in the context of sustainable development. The trade aspect of globalization is seen as an opportunity for many countries to benefit from the opening up of new markets in countries that were earlier closed or restricted; however, opinions differ with reference to Pakistan. Associates are encouraged to understand complexities in the issues of trade and globalization and see how they affect underdeveloped countries. The role of influential donors and policy makers, such as the United Nations, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, is explored. The session also explains concepts within economic growth, governance, and industrialization, for example policies about taxation, import and export, and access to markets. It aims to offer a deeper understanding of current issues relating to the World Trade Organization, regional trading blocs, and the structural adjustment program.

Energy and Technology

This training session covers issues related to the supply of energy, its use and sustainability. It looks at basic concepts of energy and energy use trends in Pakistan, as well as the energy pricing mechanism. It also discusses alternative and appropriate technology, such as wind, solar, nuclear, and bio-mass energy, combined cycle thermal generation, mini hydel-power generation, as well as barriers in their implementation. Environmental impacts of various energy resources, such as oil and gas exploration and infrastructure, and coal and electric power development, are considered. The session is based on the working assumption that Associates must understand the basics of energy production and use in order to appreciate the current problems and issues in relation to sustainable development. For this, Associates are acquainted with institutions playing a pivotal role in decision-making and policy formulation process in the energy sector.

Human Settlements

The module on human settlements highlights the interrelated and interdependent nature of human settlement units. This interdependence creates units comprising of several rural, urban and industrial settlements, and the module addresses the politics arising from their interaction. It looks at geographical, economical and sociological implications as well as resource use. The module seeks to generate integrated solutions to problems of human settlement, by focusing on areas such as transportation, pollution, water and sanitation. It explores the causes, justifications and consequences of squatter settlements or katchi abadis.

Resource Use

The purpose of this training session is to impart an understanding of natural resource issues, with special reference to a particular area of Pakistan, and to explain the role of different stakeholders in sustainable management and in the preservation of natural resources. The sessions allow Associates to deliberate on potential outcomes of unsustainable use and to assess the causes of natural resource depletion. Organizations working towards the conservation of plants and animals, and case studies of pollution monitoring of the study area are discussed in detail. Associates learn the concepts of renewable and non-renewable resources, and about the causes of potential exhaustibility of a resource.
