 Framing the Story: Key Reporting/documenting Tips – Alex Kirby, Joydeep Gupta, Huma Beg, Rina Saeed Khan, Danish Mustafa, Afia Salam

 

Breakout groups separate and discuss key reporting techniques:

·         story angles and reliability of different types of sources

  • pitching stories successfully at editorial meetings

  • translating jargon and explaining difficult science and uncertainty

  • improving appeal of stories through style

  • brainstorming about how to cover a particular story; we tell them the top line and ask them how they would go about doing it, given the constraints of their medium

  • examples of stories that illustrate techniques which have worked

 

Following the discussions, each breakout group will report back, supplemented by training segments on key reporting techniques

Open discussion by all participants on problems and prospects of reporting on water/food issues followed by written feedback plus evaluations (Alex, Joydeep)

Discussion on a proposed climate change media network between Pakistani and Indian journalists and preparation and exploring funding opportunities for COP 16 to be held in Mexico in 2010  (Joydeep, Alex, Afia Salam and Rina Saeed Khan)

 

Day 3: Tuesday, March 30th 2010

Field Trip to Patriata (site of so-called ‘New Murree’) to visit UNDP GEF’s Small Grants Programme funded project on water conservation and planting of fruit trees (climate change mitigation) and case study on successful green lobbying against New Murree project and luxury golf resort.

  • Welcome by Field Focal Person – 0930 hrs – 0940 hrs (10 mins)

  • Orientation about Water Conservation and Planting of Fruit Tree Project (Climate Change Mitigation) – (0940 hrs – 1010 hrs) – 30 mins

  • Q & A with Tea (1010 hrs – 1030 hrs) – 20 mins

  • Actual inspection/ visit of the Project sites (1030 hrs – 1200 hrs) – Photographs can be taken during the visit that will later be used in the stories and case studies

1200 hrs – 1300 hrs

Lunch at Patriata mountain top

  • Lunch will be done in the field

1300 hrs – 1430 hrs

Arrival in Hotel

  • Participants to be seated in coasters sharp at 1300 hrs for arrival in hotel sharp at 1430 hrs
