Altaf A. Abro

Professor of Sociology

University of Sindh

Cohort 5

Mr. Abro has a Masters degree in Rural Regional Development Planning from the Human Settlements Development Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand, with five years of experience in the social development sector. He has worked as a Sociologist for Raasta Development Consultants and the RWSS for Sukkur and Larkana districts in Sindh. He has organized workshops on the RWSS project in conjunction with the Government of Sindh and UNICEF. Mr. Abro was also a socio-economist on the Secondary Impact Evaluation study of the Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) Stage-1 project, commissioned by joint donors including the World Bank and the Swiss Development Corporation. Currently, he is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Sindh. His areas of interest are rural & urban environment management, induction of environment-friendly technologies, eradication of poverty, and sustainable development.

 

Abdul Hafeez Buzdar

Mr. Buzdar holds a Masters degree in Botany from the University of Balochistan and another Masters degree in Human Settlements Development with a specialization in rural and regional development planning from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. Mr. Buzdar has been working with the European Commission’s Rural Social Development Program (RSDP) since Sept. 1998 as a Deputy Program Coordinator. RSDP providestechnical assistance to six high ranking national umbrella NGOs involved in the socioeconomic development of rural and semi-urban communities of Pakistan. His responsibilities include planning, monitoring, and assessment of the program as well as organizing technical assistance inputs in organizational development and targeted sectors in social development for NGOs. Prior to this, he served in different positions with the World Bank, GTZ (German Agency for Technical Cooperation) and ICIMOD-- funded projects. He has attended a number of workshops and participated in training regarding rural appraisal, monitoring and evaluation, social organization and various environmental and developmental issues.

 

Dr. Amena Hasan

Cohort 7

Dr. Hasan graduated from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, and holds a M.Phil. degree in Microbiology from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. She is also a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Previously, Dr. Hasan worked at the Clinics of Medicine and Surgery and in the Department of Animal Reproduction at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Currently she works for the Save the Children Fund in Sialkot. She has also been employed with the Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP) in Gilgit. She is a member of WWF-Pakistan and the Environment Protection Club at Quaid-i-Azam University.

 

Abdul Rahim Basit Khan

Mr Khan is a graduate Civil Engineer with Masters in Environmental Engineering from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London.  He started his career as an irrigation engineer in 1990 with a World Bank TATeam associated with Balochistan Minor Irrigation & Agriculture Development Project (BMIADP).  In 1994 he joined Balochistan Rural Support program (BRSP) as head of the Engineering Section. After his masters program, he worked for World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan, from 1995-2000, as Director Northern Areas and Environment Pollution Unit.  His work included development of legal, policy and implementation framework for sustainable resource use initiatives in Northern Areas in association with Forest & Wildlife Department, IUCN and AKRSP.  He also worked on urban and industrial pollution control projects and building the capacity of industry and other stakeholders for environmental management.  In March 2000 he joined Premier KUFPEC Pakistan B.V. and worked as Manager Environment & Community Relations.  He played a key role in the s the successful management of the first environmentally sensitive hydrocarbon exploration project in Khirthar National Park, Pakistan. The project was an international case study for employing pioneering environmental management techniques and stakeholder communication tools. The project also achieved ISO 14001 & Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OSHAS) 18001 accreditation in July 2004.  Since August 2004 he has been an advisor to Premier Oil-India, based in New Delhi, regarding environmental management of petroleum exploration in tropical forests with sensitive primate species.  In April 2005, he started advising MOL Pakistan Oil & Gas Co. B.V. on the management of community relations and development portfolio.  He is an avid cyclist, a keen trekker and loves the outdoors.

 

Azhar Mansur Khan

Lt. Col. A. M. Khan has a Ph.D. in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA. He also has a Masters in Economics from the same university. Currently, he is working for the Pakistan Army in their Combat Development Directorate, at the General Headquarters. He is the head of the Cost-Benefit Analysis Cell and, with his ability to integrate his knowledge of engineering and economics, he has gained expertise in project evaluation, economic feasibility studies and cost-benefit analysis. He has published articles dealing with economics and aerospace/mechanical engineering. Lt. Col. Azhar has been working on means of linking the military with issues of sustainable development and environment protection. He has conceived a model in this regard and hopes that LEAD training will help him test the practical impacts of this concept.

 

Ashfaq Ahmad Khokhar

Program Officer

Possessing a Masters in Economics from Punjab University, Mr. Khokhar has over seven years of experience in working with various international NGOs. These include the Population Council and Hagler Bailey Inc. (energy and social sector research and development consultancy) for whom he undertook operational research on issues of population dynamics and family planning in Pakistan. He has also worked on a number of research studies funded by USAID, the World Bank and UNICEF. Since 1995, Mr. Khokhar has been associated with the Ghazi Barotha Development Organization as Program Officer. His work includes the provision of advocacy to the affected communities for their land compensation and resettlement rights. In addition, his work involves monitoring, evaluation and report writing on social and environmental issues. Mr. Khokhar also coordinates with other agencies to ensure the implementation of mitigation plans and works for the promotion of participatory development for the sustainable social and environmental uplift of communities, focusing particularly on vulnerable social groups. He hopes to strengthen his understanding of national and global environmental issues and increase his knowledge of related subjects. As a result, he will be able to expand his responsibilities and involvement in hydropower projects, resulting in the improvement of its impact on environment and development in a particular area.

Ms. Arjumand Nizami

Program Officer NRM

Ms. Nizami did her Bachelors and Masters in Forestry from Pakistan Forest Institute, Peshawar. Her specialization was in Social Forestry (Farm and Energy Forestry Management, Agroforestry and economics). In 1993, she joined Balochistan Rural Support Programme, previously Pak-German Self Help Project, as Programme Specialist Agroforestry. Her major focus was on Northern Balochistan with occasional support provided to the Southern parts of the Province. In BRSP, she streamlined Social Forestry Sector and prepared a Social Forestry Master Plan, which received funding from USAID and Environment & Urban Affairs Division Government of Balochistan. She also introduced and implemented Range Management and forestry training Programmes in Balochistan. During her job she worked closely with rural men and women, often dealing first hand with poverty illiteracy and issues like conflict management in NRM in the region. After serving BRSP for four years, she joined Enterprise and Development Consulting (EDC) as Assistant Manager Natural Resources. She was assigned to work as M&E Consultant for the Dutch funded Social Forestry Project Malakand-Dir up in the North NWFP. Later she served DHV Consultants BV on the same position. She studied effects of the project interventions (extension, forestry, institutional development) in the target areas. She also developed computerized monitoring programmes and trained the people. During her three years consultancy in SFPMD she developed seven working papers on various studies. In 1999 she joined Swiss Development Cooperation – Inter-Cooperation as National Programme Officer NRM. Her responsibilities in SDCIC include NRM programme development, provide backstopping to programme mandate and management. She has had an informal association with the Pakistan Television and Radio Pakistan in the past. Her favourite thematic areas of work are desertification, poverty, institutional reforms, community forestry, livelihood based NRM, stakeholders analyses, NRM conflict management. She is a member of cohort 4 in LEAD Pakistan and participated in trainings in Costa Rica, Japan and Zimbabwe. She also represented LEAD Delegation in World Science Conference UNESCO/ICSU) in Budapest, Hungary. She is now serving as a Director at Board of Governors LEAD Pakistan since 1999. Born in 1971, married in 1998 and has one daughter.

 

Ayaz Latif Palijo

Mr. Palijo is a lawyer by profession, a writer and activist by interest and an engineer and researcher by qualification. He is a graduate of Civil Engineering from the Mehran University of Engineering & Technology, and a graduate of law from Sindh University, Jamshoro. Mr. Palijo received his M.Sc. in Rural Development from Wye College, University of London, under the SU-Wye link program. He has nine years experience with the Irrigation & Power Department, the Sindh Arid Zone Development Authority (SAZDA), Oxfam, Legal Practice and the largest provincial monthly magazine Subuh Theendo. He has been holding the responsibilities of Chairman of the Sindh Research Council (SRC) and the General Secretary of the Sindh Intellectual Forum for several years, and has been contributing to the advocacy and research initiatives of SRC, the Awami Intellectual Forum, Subuh Theendo and Sindhorg List in the fields of development, environment, human rights, legal aid and conservation. As a SRC Researcher, he has been monitoring the National Drainage Programme and Kirthar oil exploration and its effects on wildlife and the environment. He has written extensively on environment, politics, education and gender issues in five daily newspapers of Sindh: Kawish, Ibrat, Jago, Sawal & Sach and the English daily Dawn. He has also written four books and hundreds of columns and travelogues of the USA, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, China, India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, UAE, Singapore & Hong Kong. Recently he launched the first and the largest circulated development and environment related email list of Pakistan, SINDHORG, and has initiated a free legal aid structure for the needy. Mr. Palijo was recently elected as a member of a Consultative Group for the World Commission of Dams for South Asia.

 

Mr. Abdul Qadir Rafiq

Mr. Rafiq holds a Masters degree in Irrigation & Drainage from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Currently, Mr. Rafiq is currently working as a Program Officer in the Global Environment Facility unit of the United Nations Development Program Pakistan (UNDP-Pakistan). Prior to joining UNDP, he was working as a consultant with the National Engineering Services of Pakistan (NESPAK). Mr. Rafiq has been involved in the planning and designing of the Dera Ghazi Khan Integrated Drainage and Irrigation Project, the Drainage Sector Environmental Assessment Study, the National Drainage Program and the Muzaffargarh Canal Command Project.

 

Amir Said

Dr. Said received his Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from Punjab University, Lahore. After working on the quality control of Packages Limited in Pakistan, he went on to earn his Ph.D. from Sheffield University in the UK. His doctoral work focused on the benefaction of high ash coals. Dr. Said currently works in the Department of Research and Development at Packages Limited.

 

Ahmed Saeed Shaikh

Program Officer

Mr. Shaikh received his Masters degree in Urban Planning and Environmental Management from the Asian Insititue of Technology in Bangkok. He is a development professional, an architect and an urban planner with experience in program development and management and working with grass roots communities, donors and the public sector. Presently, he is working with the Aga Khan Foundation (Pakistan) as Program Officer, NGO Enhancement and the Counterpart to the CIDA – Pakistan Social and Institutional Development Program Coordinator. Mr. Shaikh has previously worked for the Trust for Voluntary Organizations (TVO), the Orangi Pilot Project (OPP) – Research & Training Institute, Arif Hasan & Associates, the Urban Resource Centre, and on assignments with Raasta Development Consultants for AKF – NGO Resource Centre (NGORC) and UNICEF. Most recently, directly contributing to all management aspects of an integrated development program, he has served the AKF – funded "Building and Construction Imporvement Program" (BACIP) as the Deputy Program Director and as the Acting Program Director from 1997-99.

 

Dr. Ashira Uzma

Dr. Uzma holds a Masters degree in Public Health in Developing Countries from the University of London, UK. She received her MBBS degree from Fatima Jinnah Medical College. Dr. Uzma was previously working as a Basic Health Specialist in the UNDP-sponsored Area Development Program, Balochistan. Here she was responsible for preparing consultancy reports on various environmental issues. Previously, she worked on rural development projects with the Balochistan Rural Support Programme (BRSP). Dr. Uzma has done freelance consulting for WWF-Pakistan. She was a Community Development Specialist with the Northern Areas Project for Halcrow-Pakistan and a Women in Development Specialist for the UNDP. She has participated in a number of trainings and workshops dealing with management, public health issues and human resources. Dr. Uzma has recently relocated to Canada.

Aftab-ur-Rehman Rana

Executive Director-Young Explorers Division

Mr. Rana received his B.Com from the University of Punjab. He is currently Executive Director - Young Explorers Division of the Adventure Foundation. Mr. Rana’s job entails the planning and operation of various kinds of national, regional and international nature study camps, wilderness explorations and adventure expeditions, such as the Nanga Parbat Mountain Clean-up Expedition. In addition, he has received a number of awards including the Trainer of the Year Award from the South Asia Tourism Human Resource Development Program (SATHROP). He also was the author of the first guide book on environment-friendly trekking and mountaineering in Pakistan. Mr. Rana has published a number of articles in leading newspapers and journals.

Previously, Mr. Rana was an Eco-tourism Advisor on the Lehri Nature Development Park Development Project funded by the UNDP. Mr. Rana was also a Recreational Advisor and a member of the WWF-Pakistan’s team working on the management plan of the Hazarganji National Park.

 

Mr. Amjad Shaikh

Mr. Amjad Sheikh is currently working as Community Relation Advisor, LASMO Oil Pakistan Limited. He is responsible for supervising LASMO community welfare projects, liaison with stakeholders, developing company image as community caring company, conducting regular M&E sessions and following legal frame works. He has been working for LASMO since the last four years. Over these years he has had an opportunity to work on risk assessment, Action planning, Leadership development, policies and procedures, audits and inspections, crises management, hazardous waste management, fire fighting, first aid, job safety analysis technique. Mr. Sheikh has to his credit an MS in Environmental Engineering from Wayne State University, Michigan. He has done his B.E in Civil Engineering from the Mehran University of Engineering & Technology. Mr. Sheikh has worked with the Government of Sindh. He has also worked with Union Texas Pakistan Limited, Wayne State University. Mr. Sheikh worked with ETPI for two years where he gained experience of environmental systems, design, environmental audits, EIAs, action planning, M&E techniques, environmental communication strategy, environmental database, environmental legislation, institutional strengthening and networking, capacity development and change agents. He feels that the LEAD training will benefit him through the quality of lectures given and interaction with other LEAD trainees.

 

Mr. Abdul Rahim Changezi

Team Leader

Mr. Abdul Rahim Changezi is currently working on Quetta Katchi Abadies Environmental Management Program QKAEMP as team leader of Society for Environmental Awareness , SEA. QKAEMP is a low cost community based cost sharing project designed to improve environmental conditions with active community participation in slums of Quetta through laying of lane sanitation and conversion /construction of Pour Flush Latrines. Mr. Changezi has to his credit a Masters Degree in Social work from The University of Balochistan. He has worked as a trainer with Balochistan Rural support Program BRSP, Quetta. He has also worked as Program Coordinator of Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) project Balochistan, Mr. Rahim has organized and conducted a series of training workshops for staff of different NGOs of Balochistan on various topics such as interpersonal communication, motivation, logical framework analysis, teamwork and assertiveness etc. He has also been writing articles for local newspapers and journals. Two of his articles on nuclear testing and its adverse affect on masses have been translated in Japanese and published in Japan. Mr. Changezi feels that the LEAD program will broaden his knowledge base through the training sessions, and national and international exposure, improve his skills and improve his attitude towards issues.

 

Mr. Ali Ahmad Jan

M&E specialist

Cohort 9

Mr. Jan is the M&E specialist for LEAD Pakistan and is also providing his expertise to DEMO Project. He has done his Masters in Economics and Mass Communications and he also holds an LLB degree. Before joining LEAD Ali Jan worked with the World Wide Fund for Nature – Pakistan (WWF – P) as Project Development Officer and then Project Manager of the Northern Areas Conservation Project. He has also worked as a Research Officer in the Planning and Development Department, Northern Areas where he served for 7 years from April 1993 to December 1999. At LEAD his main responsibilities include managing all the aspects of M&E, Project Cycle Management (PCM) and reviewing and developing project proposals in consultation with subject matter specialists for submission to donors.

Mr. Bilal Mustafa Syed

Bilal has 22 years of industrial plant experience in various aspects of operational management; engineering; and Safety Health, Environment and Quality (HSEQ), and a working experience with a Bilateral donor agencies the World Bank.

At present Bilal is working with PETROM in Romania an OMV subsidary, as Director responsible for Health, Safety , Environment & Quality. PETROM is the largest oil & gas integated company in Romania with over 45,000 work staff producing 220000 boe/d. He has worked as the Manager HSEQ for Pakistan , the largest international producers of natural gas in Pakistan. In addition to develop corporate system and procedures he is responsible for the development of community development program due to their operations. He has worked as the Senior Environmental Specialist at the World Bank Office in Islamabad Pakistan.

During his stay at the World Bank he was involved with the following projects :Ghazi Barotha Hydropower Project; Lahore Urban Transport Project; Montreal Protocol/ Ozone depletion Substance Phase out Project; Energy Sector APL Project (WAPDA); Highway Sector & National Drainage Project; Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF)

Has worked in ICI Pakistan Ltd, the largest British multinational at their Paints, Polyester & Soda Ash Sites. Major responsibilities included development of SH&E training programs; developed and implemented environmental management systems - ISO14001. Have led all new projects and plant modifications, being a trained HAZOP Leader, experience of carry out Environment Risk /Impact Studies. Have implemented Waste reduction & Energy minimization programs. He has extensive experience in auditing both in Pakistan and in the Asia Pacific Region. Am a registered Environmental Auditor with EARA (UK).

He received his Masters degree in Environmental Technology from Imperial College (UK) and his Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, USA.

Mr. Ejaz Sikander

Mr. Sikander undertook his Masters in Anthropology from the University of Peshawar with a focus on rural socio-economic patterns. Currently, Mr. Sikander is a Field Program Officer with the World Conservation Union (IUCN). He joined the Sungi Development Foundation as a Field Coordinator in 1994, as their Zonal Coordinator from 1994-97, where he was responsible for the planning, implementation and monitoring of Sungi's field and advocacy programs in district Abbottabad. During his time with Sungi he served as the focal point for a British High Commission Project on environment and development in the remote highlands of Circle Bakote. His work was focused upon developing integrated and sustainable natural resource management practices through irrigation, drinking water supply, latrine, plantation and village infrastructure schemes. Mr. Sikander has participated in numerous institution-building initiatives including a NGOs and development training conducted through the Development Studies Program at the University of New England, Armidale, Australia. His future plans include developing the capacities of social organizations to address livelihood and environmental needs through participatory involvement in community-based development initiatives.

Fauzia Bilqis Malik

Ms. Malik is currently Project Officer, Agriculture for Catholic Relief Services. Previously, she was a Social Survey Officer for Halcrow Rural Management. She has undertaken the monitoring and evaluation of an on-farm water management project, to improve the standards of living and agricultural yields of small holders by improving irrigation agronomy efficiency and water availability. She has also worked as a Social Organizer with the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) and as a Participatory Rural Appraisal Specialist with ABB on the Marala Ravi Link Canal Improving Project. She holds a Masters degree in Forestry from Peshawar University and a Masters degree in Botany from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. She is a member of WWF-Pakistan and the Pakistan Tree Farm Society.

 

Farhan Sami

Cohort 7

Mr. Sami has a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering and Water Resources Engineering from the University of Texas, Arlington, USA. Presently, he works for Euroconsult Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd. as an Environmental Specialist. His main responsibilities include policy development, proposal formulation and making cost estimates of projects in the areas of environment, development, natural resources and engineering disciplines. Previously, he worked for WWF-Pakistan as Senior Environmental Officer where his duties involved developing awareness about environment problems in the public and industrial sector and solving problems by proposing economical and efficient treatment technologies. He has also worked with the industrial sector in the USA, where he implemented environmental regulations and pollution control measures. As Chief Editor of NEEDs at NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, he wrote articles on engineering, humanity, social anomalies, environment, entertainment and news. He has also delivered lectures and presentations on environmental and sustainable development issues.

Hammad Naqi Khan

 Mr. Khan attended the University of Birmingham, UK, where he earned a M.Sc. (engineering) degree in Water Resources Technology and Management. He currently works as Senior Environmental Officer for the Environmental Pollution Unit at WWF. His responsibilities at WWF include the preparation, implementation and supervision of field-based projects, which address major environmental issues of Pakistan. Mr. Khan is also responsible for the review of environmental policies, legislation and environmental impact assessment reports. Curriculum development, the management of training programs for the corporate sector, and the development of informative and educational materials for both the print and electronic media on local and global pollution issues all fall under his responsibility. Mr. Khan has compiled and co-edited WWF-Pakistan’s EMAS Resource Book and co-authored the Environmental Guide Book. He has also written articles on environment and pollution issues in newspapers and magazines. Prior to joining the WWF, he worked for seven years with the Irrigation and Power Department, Government of Punjab.

 

Huma Mustafa Beg

Ms. Beg received her BA (Hons.) in Psychology, Education and Persian from the Islamabad College for Girls and another BA (Hons.) in Graphic Design from the London College of Printing. She is currently the Managing Director of Serendip Productions. Clients of Serendip Productions include UNICEF, UNFPA, DIFID, Save the Children, the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) and Pakistan Television (PTV).

Ms. Beg is a producer and director who has produced programs such as "Imran Khan: The Untold Story," for the BBC and "The Clean Gang" which won a British Medical Award. Ms. Beg has produced the film "Harnessing People’s Potential" which deals with poverty alleviation. In addition, she produced the film "Extra Time" which deals with child labor. Previously, Ms. Beg was a director and designer with Channel 7, an advertising agency in Pakistan.

Halima Saeed

Cohort 6

Mrs. Halima Saeed received dual Masters degrees in International Relations and Political Science from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan. She is currently working as a Training & Women in Development Coordinator with the Asian Development Bank-funded Barani Area Development Project (BADP), Peshawar. As a project-based employee of Environment Development Consultants (Pvt.) Ltd., she works for the BADP and coordinates two departments of Training and Women's Development, which includes coordination between the Barani Development Office and the implementing line agencies of BADP. Ms. Halima is also responsible for monitoring, reviewing and planning development activities in various sectors of agriculture extension, livestock extension, horticulture extension, forestry and range, rural infrastructure and village level development. She is an active member of the Swat Environmental Protection Society and has arranged a number of seminars and walks for environmental awareness. She is also working for the Society of Human Rights and Child Labour, and has organized workshops in collaboration with the International Labour Organization. Her future goal is to form an integrated rural development NGO for Swat, which is her native region. Through this NGO she would like to work with local institutions and government departments to give input for accelerating the process of sustainable development.

 

Mr. Hasan Yahya Zaidi

Mr. Zaidi is an award-winning journalist and filmmaker. He is currently Deputy Editor of News and Current Affairs for Geo TV, a regional satellite channel in the process of being launched. Previously, he worked for five years with the monthly newsmagazine Herald as its Features Editor. Two of his stories for the Herald won the All-Pakistan Newspapers Society award for journalistic excellence. He also has experience in the NGO sector, having worked earlier for the NGO Resource Centre in Karachi and a rural development program in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. He recently co-authored an UNICEF-published book on the evolution of a rural development organization in the Thar Desert of Sindh. In addition, he has worked as a volunteer teacher with displaced Mozambican children in Zimbabwe in 1991. Mr. Zaidi has a number of short films and documentaries to his credit, including "Blueprint for Change" (on the Faisalabad-based Anjuman Samaji Behbood, 1999), "Mast Qalandar" (on qawwali maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, 1997) and "The Simplest of Ideas" (on the pioneering community development initiative the Orangi Pilot Project, 1996). He also served as director of photography and editor of "Manzilein Aur Bhi" (a drama dealing with women's rights and literacy, 1994).

Iftikhar Ahmed Durrani

Mr. Durrani received his B.Sc. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. He is currently Program Coordinator for Oxfam’s Balochistan program. Some of Mr. Durrani’s responsibilities entail facilitating project reviews and audits, and planning, coordinating and implementing projects throughout Balochistan with the help of NGOs and CBOs. He also represents Oxfam in different forums conducted by the IUCN, the Women in Development Network and DAPRC (Islamabad). In addition, he provides technical advice for Oxfam’s agriculture-related projects. He is currently involved in the preparation of Oxfam’s Country Strategic Plan. Mr. Durrani has attended a number of workshops that have furthered his understanding of environment and participatory development.

Previously, Mr. Durrani served as Assistant Agricultural Engineer in the Department of Agriculture with the Government of Balochistan. He has participated in a number of workshops that have furthered his understanding of participatory development programs, environmental communication and education, the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act of 1995, and the Balochistan Conservation Strategy for sustainable development. Mr. Durrani has prepared a number of technical and financial papers for Oxfam and the European Union.

 

Ms. Ismat Gul Khattak

Ms. Khattak is currently doing her Masters in Environmental Management and Auditing from the University of Tasmania, Hobart, where her special fields of interest are environmental auditing and the implementation of the ISO 14000 series. Ms Khattak received her first Masters degree in Chemistry from the University of Peshawar. She is keenly interested in the role of environmental ethics in our day to day lives and its impacts both at the local and the global levels. Ms. Khattak has worked as an Assistant Director in the Pakistan Environment Protection Agency, for 6 years where she reviewed environmental impact assessments of public sector development projects. She has worked as a Scientific Officer in PCSIR labs for 5 years where her specific field of interest was in projects related to environmental pollution control. Ms. Khattak has also worked with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) as Provisional Coordinator for a year looking after the rehabilitation and welfare of Afghan women. She has participated in conferences and seminars on environment related topics in Pakistan and abroad where she has also presented papers.

Dr. Afzal obtained his Ph.D. in Irrigation Systems Management from Silsoe College, Cranfield Institute of Technology, Bedford, UK. He also holds a Masters degree in Irrigation and Drainage and a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Engineering. He currently works as a Water Quality Modeler, at National Engineering Services Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd. Here he is involved in the development of a salt water model which aims at predicting the impact of the proposed disposal of drainage into the River Indus from agricultural lands. Also included in the project are the existing practices of drainage and disposal, which cause pollution. His Ph.D. project was: "An Irrigation Management Model: Optimizing the Use of Different Quality Water by Alternative Irrigation." He has written extensively on environment and development issues.

Mr. Khalid Mahmood is presently working as Superintendent of Police in Islamabad Capital Territory. As Superintendent, Aiwan-e-Sadr (Presidency) he is responsible for protecting the President of Pakistan and the premises he resides in. As Additional Superintendent he supervises all police stations of Islamabad and as Superintendent traffic he is responsible for ensuring the smooth flow of traffic and checking all traffic violations. Currently he is working in coordination with the Environmental Protection Agency, Citizen Traffic Committee, ARUP (Association of Road Users of Pakistan) to check smoke emitting vehicles. Mr. Mahmood did his Masters in Human Resource Management from the University of Manchester, U.K and B.E (civil engineering) from University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. In B.E and F.Sc he received the Talent scholarship. He was awarded ‘Koh Paima for successfully climbing ‘Arif Post’ (approximately 20,000 ft) at Siachin. Mr. Mahmood has worked as a structural engineer in NESPAK and designed a compressor house for PAEC. He has also worked as a sub divisional officer in the Highway Department and supervised the overlay of Canal Bank Road in Lahore. Mr. Mahmood feels that the LEAD training could sensitize him on global and national environment development issues. He hopes that the training will provide him with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural points of view.

 

Mr. Khalid Rasul

Mr. Khalid Rasul is a Scientific Officer with CABI Bioscience which is a part of CAB International. Previously he was working as a phyto-doctor, dealing with insect, disease and weed pest problems in agricultural crops. He earned an MSc (Hons) degree with specialization in Plant Protection from NWFP Agricultural University of Peshawar in 1989. Since then he successfully performed in various organizations/projects Viz; Kalam Integrated Development Project (KIDP), Chitral Area Development Project (CADP), Ciba Geigy (Novartis), NWFP Agricultural Extension Department, NWFP Agricultural Research System, Termite Control Project, Fruit Fly Control Project, Bee Keeping Project for NWFP. He currently is serving as Research Officer/Team Member ICM Programme, Pak/Swiss Project for Horticultural Promotion in NWFP. Although he has been working on multidimensional issues regarding plant protection, but his major assignments includes developing ICM paradigms for different pest, organizing and conducting farmers meetings and training courses to motivate, educate and familiarize the farmers and extension workers with the hazardous effects of toxic chemicals and their impact on environment. Being a staunch lover of the nature, he is resolved to create awareness and reduce the application of dangerous agro-chemical through the introduction of bio-control agents and other non-chemical techniques for environment-friendly production practices. Mr. Rasul feels that the LEAD training will improve his knowledge of environment and development issues and latest research and development in this field. He also thinks that LEAD will help him identify a vision to shape the future world.

Mr. Sheraifi received his BA in Fine Arts from the National College of Arts, Lahore. He is currently a Communications and Media Specialist with the Balochistan Community Irrigation and Agriculture Project. He is responsible for designing and assisting the production of printed materials for training, producing audiocassettes for distance learning programs, and producing video films for public relations and training. Previously, Mr. Sheraifi worked for the Balochistan Rural Support Program (BRSP) were he designed awareness campaigns for farmers and artisans and conducted trainings in communication, presentation, community participation and community mobilization. He has also served as a consultant for projects sponsored by the FAO, UNDP, and the WWF. Mr. Sheraifi has conducted a number of workshops on the role of the media in the effective dissemination of information, and the preparation and use of training aids. He has participated in a number of workshops and seminars on community participation and development, international art and communications.

 

Mr. Lal Jan Mohammad

Mr. Lal Muhammad holds two Masters degrees in Economics and History from the University of Balochistan. He is currently working with the Institute for Development Studies and Practice (IDCP). His work includes promotions managing and the establishment of the institute. He is also responsible for the coordination of the institute with national and international centres of research and learning. He assists the board in policy making, future planning, and the design and implementation of training courses. Mr. Lal is an advocate of female education and has done several projects for the government of Balochistan, local NGOs, and Community Based Organizations in setting up financially sustainable projects. He has also worked on the capacity building of NGOs and Community Based Organizations and government line departments, often through community participation. Mr. Lal has also visited Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka for the study of community participation.

Mr. Ghaus received his B.Eng. in Civil Engineering from the NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, and a B.Sc. in physics, math, and statistics from the University of Karachi. Mr. Ghaus is currently the Divisional Incharge, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Auditing, Environmental Studies and Operations at NEC. In this capacity, he provides input as a team leader for the Environment Technology Program for Industries (ETPI) and conducts environmental audits (EAs) of various industries such as Al-Abid Silk Mills, Nina Industries, Habib Oil Mills, and Brooks Pharmaceutical Laboratories.

Mr. Ghaus has conducted a variety of environmental impact assessments and environmental audits of various projects and industries. He has also been involved in the study, "Policy Development Plan (PDP)" for the Korangi Environmental Management Plan. Previously, Mr. Ghaus was a Consultant with NEC where he was part of a team that conducted the initial environmental examination (IEE) and prepared the environmental impact statement (EIS) for a proposed polyester chip manufacturing plant. Previously, Mr. Ghaus was also an Assistant Consultant at NEC and conducted physical surveys, designed water retaining structures for chrome recovery and reuse plants (CRRP). At this time, Mr. Ghaus also participated in a study on in-house improvements by the Leather Industry Development Organization (LIDO) to introduce environmentally friendly processes and practices in tannery clusters.

Muhammed Usman Qazi

He went on to receive his Masters in Economics and the Management of Rural Development from the University of Manchester. Mr. Qazi is currently Training Manager with Cameos Consultants and works on the institutional development component of the Balochistan Irrigation Department, which is funded by the World Bank. His responsibilities in this role entail the preparation of a strategic plan for the human resource development of the department; supervision of a team of sectoral experts in the fields of civil engineering, economics, and community development; and the formulation of a strategy to select engineers for on-the-job training. Mr. Qazi has published a variety of reports and manuals on farmers’ training and community development.

He has published articles on ISO 14002 and clean fuel technology. Mr. Roomi is also responsible for the management and marketing of the Technology Transfer Program in collaboration with the United Nations Asian and Pacific Center Transfer of Technology. In addition, Mr. Roomi is also involved in entrepreneurship development and technology dissemination among grassroots women groups.

 

Mazhar Iqbal Shaikh

His responsibilities entail the coordination and supervision of quality assurance activities of the division, development of the business and marketing of SGS Services, and liaison with overseas affiliates for joint ventures and new services development. Mr. Shaikh has undertaken a variety of assignments in his current position such as conducting environmental audits for diversified industrial sectors, and conducting baseline studies for upcoming projects.

Previously, Mr. Shaikh worked as a Scientific Officer at the Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan where he designed research projects to solve problems faced by the gas and oil industry, and developed methods for the evaluation and quality control of chemical and petrochemical products. In addition, Mr. Shaikh was also a consultant for the sugar, fertilizer, sugar and cement industries. He has attended a number of workshops on the economic evaluation of environmental impacts, quality improvement, and environmental management.

 

Ms. Mamoona Wali Muhammad

Ms. Mamoona Wali Muhammad is currently a Lecturer in the Pakistan Forest Institute. Her responsibilities include teaching graduate and post graduate classes composed of students from all over Pakistan and abroad. She is also heading the People and Resource Dynamic project (PARDYP) of ICIMOD, Kathmandu, Nepal as Assistant Country Coordinator/ Gender Specialist. Ms. Mamoona got a post graduate degree in forestry from the Pakistan Forest Institute, Peshawar. She has received a graduate diploma in forestry for rural development from the Netherlands and has many relevant trainings from recognized national and international institutions. Ms. Mamoona started her career by joining Winrock international TAT for a USAID Forestry Project She has worked as key resource person and training specialist for a large number of projects and women’s NGOs and has also presented and published a number of papers/ reports on Women in forestry, Biomass energy and Participatory approaches in Social forestry. Ms. Mamoona hopes that she can update her knowledge about various issues and learn from the experiences of others through the LEAD training.

 

Mr. Muhammad Mujib Khan

Mr. Mohammad Mujib Khan is a civil servant by profession. Presently, he is serving as Deputy Commissioner, Haripur in the North West Frontier Province and this position, apart from the usual law and order and revenue administration, makes him responsible for overseeing the entire public sector development program. He is currently implementing the Government Poverty Alleviation Program. Mr. Khan has to his credit a degree in Medicine and Surgery from Khyber Medical College, North West Frontier Province. He also earned an M.Sc. degree in the field of Management from London School of Economics in 1998. During his career he has served both in the field and on Staff job positions; as Assistant Commissioner in Bakkar, Esakhel and Shakargarh, as Deputy secretary in the Finance & S&GAD in the Punjab and as ADC(G) in Jhang and Sargodha. Mr. Khan has also served as the Deputy Chief Economist in the NWFP PE&D Department. He led the multi-donor funded ‘PEP’ project. Mr. Khan has a special interest in institutional reforms, sustainable development, gender issues and environmental protection. He heads the District Environmental Committee, which is in its embryonic phase and has membership from the concerned government departments, the NGOs and the wider civil society. Mr. Khan thinks that the LEAD training will equip him with new perceptions and insights to the process of sustainable development. This along with the national and international exposure in the LEAD program will enable him to contribute significantly at policy formulating positions.

 

 

Mr. Muhammad Shahid Shabaz

Mr. Muhammad Shahid Shahbaz is currently serving as Manager Spinning at Crescent Textile Mills Ltd., Faisalabad. He is performing the job of product planning & management. He is in-charge of balancing modernization & rehabilitation (BMR) plans of spinning units and is handling various future projects of Crescent Mills. His Experience includes project planning, machinery selection, installation and commissioning & administration of the textile industry. Mr. Shahbaz earned his MBA from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad . He has done B.E (Hons) in Textile Engineering from National College Of Textile Engineering (NCTE), Faisalabad. He was selected as best student of the year 1992 from Pakistan by Rieter Spinning System of Switzerland (A leading Textile Machinery Manufacturer of Europe). Mr. Shahzad has participated in a number of technical courses on textile and contributed in documentation, implementation & Certification of ISO 9002 quality management system at Crescent. He is also an internal Auditor for ISO quality system in the company. Mr. Shahbaz feels that LEAD is platform for him to broaden his knowledge. Mr. Muhammad Javed Cheema

Mr. Muhammad Javed Cheema is currently working as Project Coordinator of ICTP (Introduction of Cleaner Technologies for Tanneries Cluster of Punjab) project. Under his supervision the ICTP team of national and international experts are implementing the project components such as Institutional Networking, Dissemination and Communication, Institutional Development, IEE Survey and Database Development, Environmental Audits and Training and Human Resource Development. Mr. Cheema is working as advisor for ETPI (Environmental Technology Program for Industry) and his specific inputs are, conducting environmental audit, preparation of action plan and design and construction supervision of cleaner production options (CP). Under the ETPI project, Mr. Cheema has worked for Engro Chemicals, Shakarganj Sugar Mill, Century Paper Mill, Flying paper etc. He is incharge of NEC Environmental Laboratory Services at Lahore, which is providing environmental testing facility to the Industrial Sector. He is also managing business development work for NEC in Punjab the NWFP region. Mr. Cheema received his M.Engg in Environmental Engineering from Asia Institute of Technology (AIT) Bangkok, Thailand. Mr. Cheema has worked with Mott Macdonald’s in Thailand. He has worked in South east Asia for about 5 years. Mr. Cheema feels that the LEAD training through modules on various issues will provide him with a broader environmental view and give him a more multidisciplinary outlook.

 

Dr. Muhammad Pervaiz

Since 1988, Dr. M. Pervaz was working with the Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan(HDIP). At HDIP He held the position of Principal Scientific Officer (Principal Chemist) and was responsible for research /consultancy services in petroleum geochemistry, environment monitoring. He has vast experience in establishing analytical laboratories, planning and executing research and consultancy projects for petroleum source rock, and carrying out environmental studies. In July 2000 He was posted in HDIP Head Office Islamabad and he was actively involved in technical and policy research in energy and environment. His experience at the HDIP also includes the maintenance and management of organization's website. He is a member of the team headed by Mr. Hilal A. Raza, International Energy Expert, which is working to promote Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), pioneered by the HDIP, as an alternate transport fuel.

He joined SAARC Energy Centre (SEC), Islamabad on 14.09.2007 as a Programme Leader, Technology Transfer. There he is responsible for promotion of energy technologies transfer and sharing of best practices especially renewable energy technologies in SAARC Member States.

Dr. Pervaz has worked as a visiting scientist on postdoctoral research projects in marine geochemistry at the Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), Hannover, Germany. In addition he is also working for the promotion of renewable energy technologies in Pakistan. He is actively participating in Pakistan's initiative to introduce ethanol blending in gasoline. Present and past professional affiliation include the New York Academy of Sciences, the European Association of Organic Geochemists, and the Chemical Society of Pakistan (Life Member), Pakistan Association of Geoscientists and Life Member Society of Asian Civilizations. Dr. Pervaz widely travelled home & abroad and participated in many national/international conferences, seminars, workshops and training courses related to the environment, Energy, chemistry, and geochemistry. He has about 50 research publications to his credit, including a chapter in the book Geology, Geochemistry and the Composition of Oil Shales published by Kluwer Academics, Dordrecht, The Netherlands. Dr. Pervaz obtained a Ph.D in Chemistry with a specialization in Analytical and Petroleum Geochemistry, undertaken in collaboration with the Technical University of Aachen, Germany, from Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. He holds an M.Phil degree with a specialization in Analytical and Inorganic Chemistry from the same university. He obtained his M.Sc and B.Sc degrees from University of Peshawar, Pakistan. He has been graduated as LEAD Fellow in 2002 in an international Session held in Mexico.

 

Mehjabeen Abidi-Habib

Mehjabeen Abidi-Habib works for the UNDP as the Provincial Coordinator for the Global Environment Facility (GEF), managing the Small Grants Program for Punjab. This involves administering grants to community organizations and mobilizing institutional support for conservation and development projects. Before this, she worked for UNICEF-Pakistan as Program Officer for Women’s and Child Rights, giving her a total of 4 years in the United Nations system. Now in the thirteenth year of her career, she has focussed on human development and environmental conservation from different perspectives in parts of Pakistan. She has experience in managing development interventions at a range of levels, from area-based projects, to facilitating government department programs, and designing initiatives for legal reform at the national level. She has worked with the Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP), GTZ (The German Agency for Technical Cooperation) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN). By training she is a natural scientist, earning her Masters degree from the University of London, Wye College in Applied Plant Sciences. She is the author of a resource paper for the National Conservation Strategy of Pakistan, and co-author of a book entitled Pakistan's Environment. She is an honorary executive member of the Pakistan Girl Guides Association where she advises on girls’ education, and is a steering committee member of the Gender, Poverty and Water Unit of the International Irrigation Management Institute-Pakistan.

His expertise includes desk-top publishing, public relations, media management, designing and publishing. Mr. Ahmed has also won awards for his innovative work in journalism.

 

Muhammad Masud Akhtar

He is responsible for production, planning, engineering, final test and after sales service departments including their budgets and expense control, and acquisition of new investments for the industrial plant. Mr. Akhtar has vast experience in the production and manufacturing of products working for APD Cryogenics, US and Micro Electronics International Ltd. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary

Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary is currently a Professor at the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi, Karachi where he supervises research leading to the degree of Ph.D. Dr. Choudhary received his Masters and Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Karachi and completed post-doctoral studies at Cornell University and Pennsylvania State University, USA. He has written and edited 6 books, most of which have been published in the USA and Europe. He is also the author of about 200 research papers and chapters in top international science journals. Based on the impact of his science publications, he was graded as the third best chemist in the nation in a book, Leading Scientists of Pakistan published by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan. His work has resulted in a number of important scientific discoveries including the discovery of plant materials with pronounced antidiabetic, anti-epileptic and cholesterol-lowering activities. He is also a pioneer of research in the fields of the chemical defense system in marine invertebrates and the inhibition of clinically important enzymes in Pakistan. He played an important role in the establishment of the tissue-culture section and the first X-ray diffraction, bioassay and enzymology laboratories in Pakistan at the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry. Mohammed Jehanzeb Khan

Mr. Khan is the Deputy Commissioner of Abbottabad in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. He has a degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Peshawar, but decided to join the civil service after appearing in the competitive examination in 1987 for the Central Superior Services. He has since served in a number of field and secretariat assignments. Mr. Khan served as the Assistant Commissioner in Wazirabad and Lahore, and as Deputy Secretary Finance in the Government of Punjab. Mr. Khan has been the Provincial Coordinator of the Social Action Program (SAP) in NWFP. During this period he was closely associated with policy planning, implementation, and the monitoring and evaluation of the Program. Dr. Khan is particularly interested in issues of human resource development, governance, institutional reforms and sustainable development. He was recently posted as Deputy Commissioner, Bannu which provided him the unique opportunity of overseeing the entire public sector development and enforcement network of a district. Jehanzeb Khan is closely involved in development through local government institutions. He also coordinated the implementation of public welfare projects through community involvement. Currently, he is at the University of Birmingham pursuing an MBA.

 

Dr. Murtaza Malik

Dr. Malik received his Ph.D. in Wastewater Treatment and his Masters degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Newcastle. He also holds a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar. Currently, Mr. Malik works as a Program Executive with GTZ (The German Agency for Technical Cooperation). He has worked on several research projects dealing with anaerobic digestion and sewage treatment methods. He previously worked as Deputy Director in the NWFP-Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Peshawar. His responsibilities include giving technical advice on issues like solid waste management and wastewater treatment and compliance with National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS). Mr. Malik has presented, participated, and organized several workshops regarding pollution control, sewage treatment and other related issues. He is a member of several national and international organizations and has published twelve papers in international journals and conference proceedings. His paper won the first prize in the British Chartered Institution of Water and Environment Management’s (CIWEM)"Young Authors Competition-1996". He has also worked as the Project Manager of a World Bank-funded and EPA-implemented project, "Protection of River Swat."

 

Mr. Muhammad Azhar Qureshi

Mr. Qureshi earned his Masters degree in Zoology with a specialization in microbiology from Punjab University in Lahore. He is currently working as Manager Fellows Program in LEAD Pakistan and is also Senior Scientific Officer with Integrated Pest Management Consultants (Pvt.) Ltd. in Islamabad. His activities in this capacity include the promotion of production practices through integrated pest and disease management. He works towards the reduction of hazardous agro-chemicals through the introduction and application of biological control agents and other non-chemical techniques for environment-friendly production practices. Mr. Qureshi has conducted research on integrated pest management and published 12 research papers and 8 reports of his findings.

 

Muhammad Irshad Ramay

Mr. Ramay was previously employed as Process Engineer at Hoechst Ravi Chemicals. He obtained his engineering degree in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in petroleum and gas from Punjab University in 1990. He also has four years experience at Pakistan Refinery, Karachi, as a technologist. His functional activities were research and development, control of environment pollution, energy conservation, wastewater treatment, and the proper disposal of refinery waste. He attained first position in the specialization of petroleum and gas during his educational career. Currently he is employed by Attock Refinery. He has taken a number of courses and participated in trainings that focused on environment and petrochemicals.

 

Mr. Muhammad Saleem

Mr. Saleem received his Bachelors degree in Economics while working as a Lower Division Clerk in the government services. He continued his education at the University of Punjab, where he received his Masters degree in Economics, and at the University of Manchester, UK, where he earned an advanced postgraduate diploma in Development Economics. He currently serves as Coordinator Linkages at the AKRSP, where he is responsible for developing linkages with government, local and international NGOs and sector and development programs. He also works part-time as an Indus River Commission Research Project Leader on a water, sanitation, hygiene and health studies project. Here Mr. Saleem identifies the problems of improved water supply systems, the causes of these problems and then proposes solutions to these issues. he objective of the project is to build the capacities of the communities to manage their own improved water supply systems.

Naila Hussain

Ms. Hussain studied Journalism at Punjab University and then obtained her Masters degree in Environmental Resources from Salford University in the UK after receiving a British Council Scholarship. She currently works at Shirkat Gah (a women's research and resource center) on the effects of pesticides on cotton pickers, who are mostly women. She has previously edited UNDP reports under the LIFE and GEF programs. The program is based on community-level activists and managers and aims to develop low-cost solutions with the help of professional experts. Her past experience includes working as a Communications Officer at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute where her responsibilities included jointly editing the First Citizens Report on Sustainable Development Relating to Pakistan: Water, Power and People and the dissemination of environmental information to the media. Assistance in joint projects with groups like Greenpeace was also part of her job. Previously she wrote for the daily Nation where she focused on development issues, environment problems and culture.

 

Nasrullah Khawar

Mr. Nasrullah earned his Masters in Rural Development from the University of Sindh, with a special focus on gender relations and agrarian change. He also has a Masters in History and a LLB from the University of Balochistan. Currently he is working as the Coordinator Field Operation with the Aurat Publication and Information Service Foundation. Previously, Mr. Khawar was a Senior Program Officer with the Aurat Foundation. In this capacity, his work involved coordinating their Political Education Program, and disseminating information to rural women. Apart from this he also works on the gender sensitization of government officials, media, political workers and social activists. Mr. Nasrullah has also successfully implemented the World Bank-funded project, Urban Fellowship Program, for female education in different cities of Balochistan. He has written many articles that have been published in various environmental and political journals. He is also the Secretary of the Balochistan NGO Federation, which is a network consisting of 138 member organizations.

 

Mr. Nasir Ali Panhwar

Mr. Panhwar is a development worker. He holds a Masters degree in Sociology from the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, and is currently working as the Deputy Coordinator of the NGO/Community Support Unit IUCN, Karachi. Prior to this, he worked for Raasta Development Consultants as Community Development Coordinator. Mr. Panhwar was deployed by Raasta as Institutional Specialist on the Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) Project (1996-98). He is Secretary General of Sindh Goth Sudhar Sangat (SGSS), a network of rural CBOs working throughout Sindh Province since 1983. He is Executive Editor of the monthly magazine, PARAS, which is committed to raising awareness on social development and environmental issues. Mr. Panhwar has undertaken extensive research. The topics of his research have been diverse, dealing with issues such as social development programs for Sindhi women and analysis of child labor in the carpet industry of Thar.

 

Naeem Ashraf Raja

Mr. Raja holds a Masters degree in Forestry and is currently affiliated with the Central Asia Sustainable Use Specialist Group (SUSG-CASIA). SUSG-CASIA is one of fifteen SUSGs established under the Sustainable Use Initiative (SUI) of IUCN’s Species Survival Commission. SUSG-CASIA consists of an interdisciplinary membership of volunteers comprising specialists in conservation, sociology, political science, communications, law, land-use planning, etc. As a contribution to the SUI, SUSG-CASIA has planned to undertake case studies to identify and analyze those factors that enhance the sustainable use of wild biological resources. He was previously involved in the Himalayan Jungle Project (HJP), a bio-diversity conservation and development project in the Palas Valley in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. The goal of HJP was to conserve the forests and wildlife of the region by working closely with local communities and empowering them in the development of sustainable sources of income. Mr. Raja was involved with several aspects of the project such as forest management, bio-diversity conservation, social organization and community mobilization. Mr. Raja has published many papers and reports and conducted a number of surveys in collaboration with the Pakistan Museum of Natural History and the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC).

Ms. Nafisa Shah

Ms. Shah is affiliated with the Sustainable Development Policy Institute in Islamabad. Before this she worked as a senior reporter with Newsline, an independent Pakistani magazine, where she wrote on development and environmental issues. Her fields of interest include deforestation, the breakdown of civic structures in Karachi, displacement of the Sindhi nomads and women’s issues. She was awarded the Best Article of the Year award from the All-Pakistan Newspaper Society and her name appeared on the UN Global Roll of Honor in 1993. She has contributed a number of articles to magazines and journals such as Common Cause, Panoscope, and the National Conservation Strategy Bulletin, IUCN Pakistan. Ms. Shah has presented papers on Sindhi women’s social status and education, human rights and the environment.

 

Noor-un-Nisa Ghangroo

Ms. Ghangroo received her MA in International Relations from Karachi University. She is currently a freelance consultant working for Oxfam and OSH Communications. Ms. Ghangroo is currently studying the policy reforms of the National Drainage Programme-Pakistan for Oxfam. She is working on a documentary on the sea level rise and its impact on the human population living along the Pakistani coast for OSH Communications. Ms. Ghangroo is also conducts a monthly workshop on environmental education for the Layari Community Development Project. Whilst working at WWF-Pakistan, she assisted in a study titled, "The Root Causes of Biodiversity Loss in Mangroves Ecosystems at the Indus Delta and Balochistan Coast." Ms. Ghangroo has conducted a number of workshops on topics such as community activism, poverty alleviation and the monitoring and evaluation of community organizations.

Previously, Ms. Ghangroo was a Project Development Coordinator with GHK International, a UK-based management consulting firm. Here she was involved with the Faisalabad Area Upgrading Project, and was charged with the identification of the needs of the poor and the facilitation of the capacity-building of social organizers (SOs) and multi-purpose community organizations (MPCOs). As a Community Organization Coordinator with GHK International, Ms. Ghangroo together with field teams developed a methodology for sustainable community organization formation through a process of local management, institution-building, capital formation and skill enhancing.

Mr. Yunus received his Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. He is currently working as a Safety Engineer at SAABIC, in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Previously, Mr. Yunus was a Senior Safety and Environment Advisor at Engro Chemical Pakistan Ltd., which is one of the leading fertilizer manufacturers in the country. Key responsibilities in this position included implementing company policies in safety/environment;

monitoring of environmental parameters; and training of personnel in the area of safety/environment.

Prior to his Engro assignment, Mr. Yunus was a member of the project team responsible for relocating two world scale plants from overseas to Pakistan. His mandate in this team was to design and specify the utility equipment necessary for the project.

Rubina Zahur

Ms. Zahur received her M.Sc. in Botany from the University of the Punjab and an MA in Elementary School Science Education from Columbia University, NY. She is currently the Chairperson of the Department of Science Education at the Ali Institute of Education and is responsible for conducting science education sessions for pre-service and in-service teachers and developing material and modules for training and resource centers. Ms. Zahur has published a number of articles on teacher’s education and science. She has conducted a number of workshops on topics such as teachers’ trainings, and approaches to teaching. Ms. Zahur has attended a number of workshops pertaining to teaching and the environment. Ms. Zahur is currently a member of a core team working with the WWF and the Ministry of Environment that is working on organizing the first GLOBE Workshop to be held in Pakistan. In addition, she is involved in two projects that deal with teaching and learning through environment for private schools in Lahore and rural primary schools.

 

Ms. Rahila Durrani

Ms. Rahila Durrani is working in various sectors including social, education, journalism and law. Ms. Durrani is serving in administrative posts in organizations including Helper’s Association and Aurat foundation. She is also associated with other organizations such as Pakistan Youth Federation, Pakistan Youth Crescent Organization, Balochistan NGOs Federation, Media Watch Group. WID Network Balochistan etc. She has to her credit a Masters Degree in Mass Communication from Balochistan University and a Law degree from University Law College. She has worked for reputed newspapers such as Daily Jung, Daily Zamana, Daily The Balochistan Times and Daily Bakhabar. She has also worked as editor of Aghaz. Ms. Durrani has also been associated with Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television Quetta. She founded a welfare organization called ‘Pakistan Companion’ along with some companions. This organization is serving in the health, environment and education sectors. She has vast experience in arranging workshops, seminars, conferences and group discussions. She herself has attended a number or workshops and seminars. Ms. Durrani hopes that her experience through the LEAD training will enable her to better understand people and organizations she is associated with. She feels that the LEAD program will assist her in identifying the current problems and attitudes which will help her achieve her goals as a lawyer more effectively.

 

Razina Bilgrami

Ms. Bilgrami is currently the Assistant Resident Representative for Environment in UNDP-Pakistan, and is the focal point for all activities being carried out in the environment sector and under the UNDP/GEF Program in Pakistan. Her main focus of work is biodiversity conservation and climate change. Ms. Bilgrami earned her Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi. She was awarded a British Council scholarship and went on to obtain a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London. Her thesis was awarded the Institute of Public Health's Engineer Prize for best dissertation, and focused on a review of the current technologies for thermal treatment and incineration of waste, and their environmental impact assessment. Her previous assignment was with National Environmental Consulting as Projects Manager, where she was involved in the planning, design, management, coordination and implementation of environmental management projects (EIAs, Environmental Audits, Environmental Management Plans) in the industrial sector, particularly in the leather tanning industry.

 

Roomi Hayat

Mr. Hayat is a member of the resource group of the Rural Support Program Network as Human Resource Development (HRD) Specialist. This UNDP funded network cell provides guidance and support to all Rural Support Programs in the country. In addition, Mr. Hayat is the Program Manager-HRD of NRSP. NRSP facilitates participatory development in the rural communities to reduce poverty through a program of institution building at the grassroots. As team leader-HRD, he leads a team of highly motivated and dedicated professionals based at the head office and in twelve NRSP regions, and works through teamwork and participatory decision-making. The HRD team has trained 50,000 community activists and 3,200 professionals from NRSP and other organizations in six years. Mr. Hayat has designed and conducted over two hundred trainings both nationally and abroad. He has traveled extensively in Pakistan and several foreign countries. Recently he authored a "Training of Trainers Module" for the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for the Asia & Pacific (ESCAP), and the "HRD Course for Poverty Alleviation." Mr. Hayat conducted a workshop for UN staff in Thailand. He is writing a trainer’s manual "Trainers Life Saver", to be published in late 1999. He was part of United Nations international missions to develop a Master Plan for Youth in Cambodia, and a member of the Training Formulation Mission of the UNDP multi-national team for the World Bank "National Drainage Program". Currently he is the team leader of multi-RSP team to conduct training needs assessments of three Rural Support Programs.

 

Rehana Bibi Khilji

Ms. Rehana Khilji has a Masters in Political Science from Balochistan University and a B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Arkansas, USA. She is currently working with SPO, Islamabad, as Manager, Gender and Development, where she mobilizes and strengthens women’s groups. As Program Coordinator with SPO, Quetta, she was in close contact with Community Based Organizations and other NGOs of the province, and conducted training workshops for them on topics like pest control management and conservation. She has also worked on several irrigation and agriculture projects for these Community Based Organizations in Northern Balochistan. In 1995, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock awarded Ms. Khilji a gold medal for Best Woman of Agriculture in Pakistan on World Food Day. She has also been selected by the Common Wealth Foundation for a NGO study on poverty eradication in Uganda and Africa.

Rushna Ravji

Dr. Ravji has vast experience in policy formulation, financial planning, management, monitoring and evaluation of social sector programs in the areas of primary health, reproductive & child health, and family planning. She has post-graduate degrees in Maternal and Child Health, Population Dynamics and Health Services Administration from Harvard University in the USA. Dr. Ravji has been instrumental in assisting the Government of Pakistan in the development and implementation of health sector reforms within the social sector development initiative of the Government called the Social Action Program. As the Health Specialist in the Multi-Donor Support Unit, she is leading the unit in providing technical assistance to the Government and guiding donor investments for health and population sector development. Her focus has been on health system policy and strategy development, strengthening institutions, building capacity, identification and provision of appropriate technical assistance, identifying measures for addressing governance issues, improving accountability, improving monitoring and evaluation, building partnerships with private and NGO sectors, and facilitating donor coordination. Dr Ravji has excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. She has traveled extensively in Asia, Africa, Europe and North and South America.

 

Rehana Shaikh

Ms. Shaikh has Masters degrees in Chemistry from the Sindh University of Jamshoro and in Rural Development from Wye College, London University, under the SU-Wye Link program. Currently, she is Principal Program Coordinator at Sungi. Previously, she was the Field Coordinator at the NGO Resource Center, a project of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF). Her main responsibility was to initiate and facilitate the process of the capacity building of community-based NGOs (CBNGOs) in Khairpur Mir district. Her other activities includes the management of projects, training and the dissemination of information. Ms. Shaikh has acquired field experience in the remote areas of Sindh in organizing rural communities, working on socio-economic issues, environmental rehabilitation and livestock development. Ms. Shaikh's future plans include strengthening the process of sustainable development and working on the capacity building of CBNGOs and upcoming mid-level NGOs. Her future plans also include the management of natural resource projects and conducting research for a publication on conservation and community development initiatives in Pakistan.

Syed Nadeem Hussain Bukhari

Currently, he is working for the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Local Initiative Facility for Urban Environment (LIFE) and GEF (Global Environment Facility)-Small Grants Program as a Program Monitoring Officer, where he isresponsible for coordinating and implementing a monitoring system for tracking the technical and financial performance of projects. He also guides CBOs/NGOs in improving their project implementation. Previously, he worked for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-Pakistan as Program Monitoring & Evaluation Officer. He volunteered his services in a bear-baiting survey and has conducted and organized several workshops. Mr. Bukhari has attended and organized conferences dealing with the environment.

 

Sheraz Manzoor Haider

Mr. Haider has completed post-graduate studies in Pakistan Studies from the Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. He currently works as Assistant Auditor General for the Department of the Auditor General of Pakistan on financial Monitoring & Evaluation and Third Party Validation of the Social Action Program. He has to his credit the designing and implementation of several development projects. Mr. Haider has demonstrated deep interest in social communication and performing arts. He has been a film, theatre and music critic contributing to newspapers and magazines of the likes of The Muslim, The Frontier Post, Dawn and Perspective; a scriptwriter and compere for the Pakistan Television Corporation and Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation. As a producer and scriptwriter, Mr. Haider has made a series of documentaries for radio and television on themes as diverse as women in development, universal human rights, consumer issues, and environment. One of his video documentaries was screened in an international competition hosted by Japanese television in 1999. Mr. Haider is a mainstream playwright for the experimental theatre in Pakistan and has scripted stage plays for various national and international theatre festivals.

 

Siraj Narsi

He also holds a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Narsi currently works in Houston Texas as Vice-President of a Management and Business Finance consulting company. Prior to moving to US, he worked for an educational enterprise in Calgary, Canada as well as a free lance management consultant. Before migrating to North America, he worked in Pakistan in the areas of Project Management, Educational development and management consulting. Prominently, he worked with Aga Khan Education Service Pakistan as Manager Projects and Finance, in the areas of Project Managment, educational development, strategic planning, institutional development with particular focus on female education development in rural and poor regions of Northern Areas, Chitral and Sind. As Adjunct Faculty, he taught courses in Business Communication and Management at the Institute of Business Administrationm, Pakistan's premier Business School. As a volunteer, Mr. Narsi was appointed Director on the Board of Aha Khan Housing Board of Pakistan (1996-99) and a member of the Pakistan National Council for United World Colleges (1996-98). As an independent consultant, he provided consulting services to the International Finance Corporation and the Canadian International School on issues related to project planning and development in Pakistan.

 

Syed Tauqir Hussain Shah

Dr. Shah received his MBBS from Khyber Medical College, Peshawar and his M.Sc. in Human Resource Management from the University of Manchester. He is currently Deputy Secretary to the Chief Minister of Punjab and is responsible for the preparation of federal and provincial cabinet papers/briefs for the Chief Minister. In addition, he is a member of a core group that works on institutional reforms and handles matters that pertain to the Provincial Annual Development Plan (ADP) and the Social Action Plan (SAP). Dr. Shah also coordinated the launching of the Punjab Rural Support Program. Dr. Shah has held other posts in government that have required him to work closely with NGOs such as the National Rural Support Program (NRSP) and Strengthening Participatory Organizations (SPO).

He has also served as the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chakwal District where he headed the Municipal Council of 500 people and managed a Rs. 540 million budget used for the construction of roads, and the improvement of water supply. Mr. Shah also reviewed the performance of the Faisalabad Urban Transport System (FUTS) and prepared a brief for the government of Punjab to help in the replication of this public-private sector partnership. As Assistant Commissioner he helped the SPO (Strengthening Particpatory Organizations) in the capacity-building of NGOs in Wazirabad.

Mr. Saleem Ullah

Mr. Saleem Ullah is Senior NGO Coordinator of IUCN Pakistan Sarhad Office at Peshawar. His responsibilities include the implementation of the NGO component of SPCS and therefore supporting the capacity building of NGO/CBO in NWFP for sustainable development with special focus on conservation. His duties involve networking among NGO and facilitating the NGO round table as its secretary. On behalf of IUCN-SPCS Support Unit he is actively involved in the reform process of Forestry Sector of NWFP. Mr. Saleem Ullah has to his credit and MSc degree in tropical forestry with specialization in social forestry from Wageningen Agriculture University, the Netherlands, He has worked as NRM Coordinator of IUCN for one year. He has worked in the Malakand/Dir Social Forestry Project, as Training Officer in KDIP and as field forest officer working with Integrated Extension Unit Approach. He is the member of Board of Directors of Caravan; a natural resource based NGO in Malakand division, the management committee of LASOONA-Human and Natural Resource Development Society and Asian Forest Trees and People Network at Bangkok Thailand. Mr. Saleem Ullah feels that the LEAD training will equip him with a better understanding of green issues, better communication and presentation skills. He thinks that the program will provide him with exposure to a qualified pool of resource persons and exposure to methodological training and capacity building.

Ms. Sumaira Sagheer Toor is currently working for the UNDP-ENERCON FERTS Project as an Information and Outreach Specialist. She has to her credit a post graduate degree in English Literature from the Kinnaird College for Women, Lahore. She has worked with Spectrum Dentsu Young & Rubicam as a copywriter and later as Chief Executive. She worked as Head of Creative Department at Danyaal&Assosciates (Danad). She has also worked with Enervew Concepts (Pvt.) Limited as Creative Group Head. Ms. Toor worked as a freelance consultant and handled the communication activities of various development projects. She also joined a group of people ‘Network for Community Empowerment’ and collaborated on many issues ranging from child labor, education, micro credits to human resource management. Ms. Toor was also a part of an organization called Page Maker, a skill pool of professionals from various fields who came together to explore creativity and offer expertise on different medium sized projects. She feels that the LEAD program will develop her professional skills, provide her with hands on knowledge and experience and serve as a platform to develop linkages with other professionals.

 

Mr. Sajjad Haider Rizvi

Mr. Sajjad Haider Rizvi is currently working with Quaid College as the Director. He has to his credit a Masters degree in Administrative Sciences & Commerce from the Punjab University, Lahore. Mr. Rizvi has eleven years of experience in the education sector. He has worked with local and international organizations in teachers training, social and community program and human resource development. He has been involved in projects undertaken by UNICEF (Educational Development in Pakistan), World Bank (Teacher Guide Evaluation Project), WWF (Wild Life documentation of Central Rachna Doab) and the Institute of Heritage Education (Heritage and Environmental Education). Mr. Rizvi feels that the LEAD training program will introduce him to the latest skills and techniques necessary for community leaders. He thinks that the program will improve his knowledge on various issues and provide him with an opportunity to network in national and international circles.

 

Shahzad Hussain

Mr. Hussain earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering (Hons.) from the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore. Currently he is working with the Crescent Group as an Operation Engineer in the Power Generation (PG) complex of the Crescent Textile Mills Ltd. Faisalabad. Here his main responsibilities are the safe and efficient operation of the power plant and the maintenance of ISO 9002 Quality Assurance Standards. During his work with Crescent he has worked on energy conservation projects and also on the upgrading and modernization of the plant in the utility subdivision. Mr. Hussain was also a member of the team that worked for the complete documentation, implementation and final certification of ISO 9002 Quality System in the company. Crescent Textiles has also started work on ISO 14001 and Oko-Tex Standard 100. Mr. Hussain is a member of the team formed for its implementation.

 

Saeed Ismail

Dr. Ismail did his MBBS from Dow Medical College Karachi in 1983, specializing in pediatrics and community health. He received his MCPS in pediatrics from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan in 1986. Besides being a pediatrician, he has extensive experience in community health and development. He is a founder member of the Health and Nutrition Development Society (HANDS), an NGO working in about 50 villages of Sindh in the sectors of health, education and rural development. He is also actively involved in Baahn Beli, an NGO based on an urban-rural development alliance. Baahn Beli exposes urban professionals to rural areas and offers multisectoral programs in health, education, water resource development and income generation in the remote areas of Tharparkar Desert. Dr. Saeed has conducted many workshops on primary health care and community mobilization for doctors, postgraduates, paramedics, community health workers, mothers and various NGOs.

 

Sajjad Ismail

Mr. Ismail has a Masters degree in History from the University of Punjab in Lahore. Currently, he is the Coordinator of the Education Program for the Prevention of Child Labour. He is one of the founding members of the Organization for Participatory Development where he was the coordinator of the Low Cost Sanitation Project. Mr. Ismail has participated in several training workshops sponsored by the Orangi Pilot Project (OPP), Strengthening Participatory Organizations (SPO), Ali Institute of Education, the Trust Voluntary Organizations (TVO), the British Council and the UNDP. His past work experience includes experience as the Director of the Home Schools Education Project.

Shandana Khan

Ms. Khan holds a Master’s degree in Social and Political Sciences from Cambridge University, UK. Ms. Khan is currently a Member of the Rural Support Programs Resource Group, located at the National Rural Support Program. The Group was set up to provide support to all RSPs in the country, which are currently present in 54 districts of Pakistan. As Resource Person, she provides input to all these programs. This includes support in program design and monitoring systems, facilitating experience sharing between all RSPs, facilitating linkages between other development agencies (especially that of the Government) with the RSPs, linking up with training institutes and documenting RSP lessons over the years.

 

Siddiq Ahmed Khan

Mr. Khan earned his Masters in Public Administration from the University of Peshawar. He is presently working with the child-fostering organization, Plan International as Program Unit Manager. Previously he worked with IUCN as NGOs Coordinator in their Sarhad Program. His responsibilities include the implementation of the NGO component of the Sarhad Provincial Conservation Strategy (SPCS). This involves networking amongst NGOs, and assisting with their capacity-building to ensure their efficient performance. He has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the Frontier Resource Center, a capacity-building institution for the NGOs and Community Based Organizations of NWFP. Prior to his present assignment he worked with the Sungi Development Foundation, and developed their savings and credit program, in addition to initiating their multi-sectoral development programs in Haripur district. Apart from carrying out various surveys and need assessment workshops, Mr. Khan has been part of the teams for evaluation of NGOs like Sungi, Baahn Beli and Mansehra Village Support Project. His future plans are to help the NGOs in NWFP integrate environment into their development programs.

 

Shakoor Malik

Mr. Malik has a M.Sc. in Applied Psychology from Punjab University in Lahore, where he specialized in social research, guidance and counseling. He is the founding president of SATH (Social Advancement Towards Humanity), a NGO working for the protection and regeneration of environment conducive to the survival of mankind and its sustainable development. One of Mr. Malik's key tasks with SATH is conducting mass awareness campaigns on issues like environment, sustainable development, education, health, bio-diversity and women's empowerment activities. Mr. Malik has also directed an informal home school project for poor communities in Lahore, and has helped in setting up several such schools. He is also an associate member of Greenpeace International and FDL-AP (Forum of Democratic Leaders in Asia-Pacific). Currently he is associated with a textile manufacturing group, Hira Mills, in the Capacity of ISO Coordinator/Marketing Executive. One of Mr. Malik's responsibilities includes the gradual build-up of the capability of the mill to qualify and compete for ISO Certification.

Mr. Mansur has a degree in Electrical Engineering. He also holds an aircraft maintenance engineer's license on electrical instruments & autoflight guidance systems. He is a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society (Pak. Div.), the Society of Aircraft Engineers- Pakistan, Associate Royal Aeronautical Society UK and the Institution of Electrical Engineers (Pak). In addition, he has attended many technical courses on aviation, technology, business administration, airline technical administration and various aspects of information technology. Currently he works as an Aircraft Engineer with the Pakistan Engineering and Maintenance Department, Pakistan International Airlines. Mr. Mansur specializes in avionics, one of the most advanced fields in aerospace/aviation technology. He has worked on environmental issues within the airline industry and would like to further pursue this line of work. He has worked on environmental issues within the airline industry and is the author of numerous articles and papers in reputable International periodicals .

 

Mr. Syed Mahmood Nasir

Mr. Nasir holds a Masters degree in Forestry, a post-graduate diploma in Geographical Information Systems from the International Institute for Aerospace Surveys & Earth Sciences in the Netherlands, and has taken a course on remote sensing from Indonesia. He was the elected president of the Students’ Association Board at ITC where he actively worked in the social, cultural and academic affairs with people of approximately 40 nationalities. He is currently working as Divisional Forest Officer in Bhakkar. In addition to his job, he is engaged in the social and organizational activities of NGOs. Previously he was Divisional Forest Officer for Jhelum. Mr. Nasir's fields of specialization are social forestry, range and watershed management, project management, and remote sensing.

 

Sofia Noreen

Ms. Noreen holds a Master's degree in Zoology and possesses nine years of experience in the fields of environment, sustainable development, human resource development and gender with specific focus on women, non-governmental service and consulting. Sofia is working with an international organization, Church World services, as Location Manager of the Lahore office and is responsible for coordinating capacity building programs for other NGOs/CBOs and civil society organizations. She has held coordinator and management positions in a number of projects of the Aurat Publication And Information Service Foundation. Ms. Noreen has extensive experience in all stages of project implementation including identification, feasibility, implementation (team building, management), monitoring, evaluation and report writing. She is a gender and environmental trainer. She has experience in monitoring government policies and laws and is involved in lobbying and advocacy with policy makers on different environmental, agricultural and women's issues. Previously, Ms. Noreen monitored the government's policy regarding issues of patenting in relation to indigenous knowledge, food security and the economies of farming communities. She has developed a training module on Sustainable Agricultural Practices for farmers to ensure food security of farming communities. Ms Noreen has also conducted workshops in Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Sheraz Manzoor Haider

Mr. Haider has completed post-graduate studies in Pakistan Studies from the Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. He currently works as Assistant Auditor General for the Department of the Auditor General of Pakistan on financial Monitoring & Evaluation and Third Party Validation of the Social Action Program. He has to his credit the designing and implementation of several development projects. Mr. Haider has demonstrated deep interest in social communication and performing arts. He has been a film, theatre and music critic contributing to newspapers and magazines such as The Muslim, The Frontier Post, Dawn and Perspective. He is also a scriptwriter and compere for the Pakistan Television Corporation and Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation. As a producer and scriptwriter, Mr. Haider has made a series of documentaries for radio and television on themes as diverse as women in development, universal human rights, consumer issues, and environment. One of his video documentaries was screened in an international competition hosted by Japanese television in 1999. Mr. Haider is a mainstream playwright for the experimental theatre in Pakistan and has scripted stage plays for various national and international theatre festivals.

 

Syed Nadeem Hussain Bukhari

Mr. Bukhari holds a Masters degree in Forestry from the Pakistan Forest Institute, Peshawar. Mr. Bukhari is currently working for the United Nations Development Program’s (UNDP) Local Initiative Facility for Urban Environment (LIFE) and GEF (Global Environment Facility)-Small Grants Program as a Program Monitoring Officer, where he is responsible for coordinating and implementing a monitoring system for tracking the technical and financial performance of projects. He also guides CBOs/NGOs in improving their project implementation. Previously, he worked for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-Pakistan as Program Monitoring & Evaluation Officer. He volunteered his services in a bear-baiting survey and has conducted and organized several workshops. Mr. Bukhari has attended and organized conferences dealing with the environment.

He is currently employed with WWF-Quetta, where his responsibilities include organizing and conducting training events for staff and target groups, preparation of proposals and curricula, implementation of program packages, monitoring and evaluation of performed activities and mobilization of communities at the grassroots level. Mr. Rasheed also cooperates with other agencies and the Pakistani government to further the cause of rural development.

 

Tayyaba Samina

Ms. Samina holds Masters degrees in Social Forestry and Biochemistry. Her main areas of interest are environment, community and gender development. She has worked with several national and international NGOs and is currently working as a Process Monitoring Field Officer on the World Bank Water and UNDP Sanitation Program. The focus of this program is the upgrading of community and infrastructure in the urban and rural sectors of NWFP. She has taken the lead in developing and setting up the new concept of monitoring i.e. "Process Monitoring", at the conceptual, program and implementation levels. The Water & Sanitation Partnership Project (WPP) Bangladesh has benefited from her expertise by implementing the Process Monitoring approach in their project. Previously, she worked in the field of rural development and agriculture development at the Management Service for Health, USAID, Austrian Relief Committee and the Sarhad Rural Support Corporation. In addition to a number of other publications, she is the co-author of Process Monitoring Manual.

Mr. Khan is currently Junior Engineer at the Tarbela Power Station where he works with SCADA software which is used for control and data acquisition in the power station. In the past, Mr. Khan has worked as a Junior Protection and Instrumentation Engineer at the Tarbela Power Station where he had to oversee a team of twenty-six technical staff. During his stay as a student in England, he was selected from a pool of foreign students to work with Northern Electric on database programming.

Mr. Zafar received his BA in Economics from Government College Lahore and his MBA from Quaid-e Azam University, Islamabad. He then completed an M.Sc. in Development Studies from the London School of Economics. Mr. Zafar is currently the Director Lands, in the Rehabilitation and Enforcement Department of the Capital Development Authority. He is interested in the preservation of environment and ecology. Evidence of this interest is Mr. Zafar’s role in the initiation of the Solid Waste Management Program (SWEEP) in Rawalpindi and his preparation of the master plan for the disposal of toxic effluents of the tannery industry. He has ten years of experience in government. Mr. Zafar’s previous assignment was as administrator/mayor of Rawalpindi where he was responsible for managing a Rs. 500 million budget for the planning, executing and the management of development work.

Zeba Ali

Ms. Zeba Ali is currently enrolled in the Master of Environmental Studies program at York University, Toronto. Ms. Ali earned her first Masters degree in Economics from the University of Karachi in 1989. She also completed a short-term course at Tufts University in environmental management in 1993, specializing in the field of natural resource economics. As part of her course work, Ms. Ali developed a paper on the methodologies for the environmental economic evaluation of the mangrove ecosystem in the Indus Delta. Previously, she was working as Deputy Project Coordinator with the Environmental Technology Program for Industry (ETPI), a project of National Environmental Consulting (Pvt.) Ltd. Her work involved the financial analysis of environmental audits of industries, development of technical papers for ETPI partner organizations and managing the core team of ETPI. She is able to integrate the fields of economics and environment which has allowed her to widen her work ranging from the feasibility of projects, to socio-economic studies of the environmental problems of Pakistan.

Raza Ahmad

Governance Specialist

Raza Ahmad has been working as Governance Specialist at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at its Pakistan Resident Mission since 2002. Prior to joining ADB, he was working for the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo as Civil Affairs Officer, posted in a remote municipality bordering Macedonia. In Kosovo, he assisted the UN Mission to set up municipal administration and local development operations. Mr Ahmad joined the Government of Pakistan’s district management group in 1994 after standing first in the Central Superior Services examination and served in the field as Local Administrator in four districts of the Punjab. Mr Ahmed has also worked for two leading NGOs in Pakistan: the Agha Khan Rural Support Program and Aurat Foundation. He has been educated at the London School of Economics and later trained at the Civil Services Academy, Pakistan, in Law and Public Administration.

 

Qasim Mahmood Ahmed

Qasim Mahmood Ahmed is Environmental Management Expert with LEAD Pakistan. He is responsible for developing projects and partnerships with potential partners to address environmental and governance issues. Before joining LEAD Pakistan, he was working as Manager, Environmental Education with WWF – Pakistan. He has worked for four years in the Northern Areas of Pakistan with rural communities, on biodiversity and integrated conservation and development projects. He has also worked with IUCN as Deputy Coordinator for the UNDP/ GEG funded Biodiversity Pilot Phase Project, and UNDP and UASID/ Winrock International in various capacities. Mr Ahmed is a forester/ conservationist and environmentalist by training and profession; he completed his Masters in Environmental Management, specializing in Protected Areas Management from the University of Queensland, Brisbane. Mr Ahmed possesses additional skills in human resource management, project management, capacity building, delivering trainings and proposal writing. His interests include map reading, trekking and camping.

Mirza Habib Ali

Mirza Habib Ali is Industry Liaison Officer at the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) Islamabad. His responsibilities include establishment of Public Private Partnerships for socio-economic development. He is also responsible for liaison with research and development organizations, funding institutions and the private sector for applied research projects. He holds the office of Research Associate at the Zoological Sciences Division of the Pakistan Museum of Natural History, Islamabad. Here he is in charge of the Ornithology Section. Before joining PSF, Mr Ali was working as a lecturer in Zoology in the Education Department of the Government of the Punjab, where he taught Biological Science at undergraduate level. Mohammad Arif Baloch

Mohammad Arif Baloch is working as Assistant Director, Planning and Development, with the Balochistan Coastal Development Authority (BCDA), Gwadar. His current responsibilities include development and execution of development projects in BCDA.  Before joining BCDA, Mr Baloch served as Tehsil Officer in the District Government in Gwadar. He has also worked as a Research Officer with the Planning and Development Department, Quetta. Here he was responsible for planning, appraisal, implementation and monitoring of various projects. Mr Baloch has attended several national training courses on development economics. He holds a Masters degree in Economics from the University of Balochistan, Quetta. Mr Baloch is interested in the development of coastal communities, health, education, environment and gender.

 

Waqas ul Hasan

Access to Justice Program, Peshawar

 

Waqas ul Hasan is a Provincial Program Officer for the Access to Justice Program, a major national initiative funded by the Asian Development Bank to strengthen the system of administration of justice in the country. His responsibilities include liaison with key stakeholder agencies and the civil society for implementation of program initiatives and to provide policy advice and supervise operational activities. Before joining the Access to Justice Program, Mr Hasan was a member of the Program Team, Decentralization Support Program and has worked on designing capacity building and institutional strengthening projects for the nascent local government entities created after devolution in Pakistan. Tehsil/ Town Municipal Officer, Abbotabad, was his first appointment after training at Civil Services Academy. Mr Hasan has a Masters degree in Economics from the University of Punjab, Lahore. Governance and social enterprise management are his basic areas of interest and he is a keen reader of literature on local finance and legislative issues. He enjoys reading biographies and solving mathematical puzzles.

 

Sahibzada Irfanullah

Research and Technical Officer

Sahabzada Irfanullah is Research and Technical Officer at the Farm Forestry Project. He is responsible for providing technical support to the project field teams and project partners in preparation of village development plans, general forestry activities and rehabilitation of degraded lands through innovative approaches. He is also responsible for coordinating the activities of project partners and research institutions in the establishment of sustainable farm forestry practices for poverty alleviation and livelihood improvement. Before the Farm Forestry Project, Mr Irfanullah worked for an ICIMOD based project in the Hindukush-Himalayan region of Pakistan. He worked closely with mountain communities for sustainable natural resource management. He has experience in implementation of project activities and collaborating with line agencies to make joint efforts for the benefit of poor communities through improved management of natural resources. Mr Irfanullah is a forester by training, with a Masters degree in Forestry and specialization in Watershed Management from the Pakistan Forest Institute, Peshawar, Pakistan.

Hameedullah Khan Jamali

Hameedullah Jamali is General Manager, Programs, for the Balochistan Environmental and Educational Journey (BEEJ). He is one of the founders of the organization and has been working there since 2002. He is responsible for overall management of the organization, including proposal writing, report writing, field monitoring and supervision of staff. Previously he worked with Taraqee Foundation, a leading NGO in Balochistan, as Program Officer, Micro Credit Component, in District Naseerabad, Balochistan. His areas of interest include promotion of education, environmental management with special focus on water in the Balochistan context, and conducting research on various social issues with a special focus on children. Mr Jamali is a graduate of Hamdard University, Lahore campus. He has done his Masters in Economics from Balochistan University.

 

Ahmad Khan

Senior Conservation Officer

Ahmad Khan is Senior Conservation Officer with WWF – Pakistan, Peshawar region. He is responsible for the crane and flamingo conservation project and the project on conservation of chilgoza forests and endangered Suleiman markhor in the Suleiman Mountain Range, and also coordinates the activities of the Protected Areas Management Project. Before joining WWF – Pakistan, Mr Khan worked as Range Officer with the NWFP Wildlife Department and volunteered as Executive Director of the Holistic Understanding for Justified Research and Action (HUJRA). During all this time he coordinated the activities of Care International in Pakistan and Afghanistan on a voluntary basis. Over the past few years, Mr Khan has developed his skills from a simple wildlife manager with academic training as forester to a skilled conservationist. He has successful projects like community-based conservation of the snow leopard to his name. Mr Khan holds Masters degree in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development from the University of Wisonsin in Madison, USA.

 

 

Fauzia Khan

Dr Fauzia Khan is a public health professional. She is currently working with Contech International, Health Consultants, as Program Manager, Technical Assistance Management Agency, a USAID and DFID project. She is a Fellow of the Population Council, Pakistan and Leadership Development Mechanism, International Institute of Education, USA. Dr Khan is actively involved in public health networks and coordination of training and policy initiatives of different public functionaries and NGOs. She has presented technical papers in various conferences and seminars and also acts as a resource person for different reproductive and public health capacity building programs. Mushtaq Ahmed Khan

Mushtaq Ahmed Khan is currently working as Director Environment for the National Highway Improvement Program, National Highway Authority. He has worked for the State Highway, Maryland, and Federal Highway Administration, USA. He was responsible for review of environmental documents and worked extensively on the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) as well as the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) for six months in Washington DC, USA. Mr Khan is an environmental engineer by profession and has done his Bachelors in Civil Engineering and MSc in Environmental Engineering. He is now working on his PhD in Environmental Engineering. The areas of his expertise deal with social and environmental issues.  

 

Shazia Tehmas Khan

District Councilor

City District Government, Peshawar

Shazia Tehmas Khan is a District Councilor in the City District Government of Peshawar, responsible for community development. Previously she has worked with various NGOs as well as the electronic media eg; PTV, radio etc. She also works on a voluntary basis with various governmental as well as non-governmental organizations. In addition she works as a resource person on women’s political participation and Convention on The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). She is working as a Master Trainer in different projects of UNDP and the Ministry of Women’s Development. Ms Khan is also a Human Rights Activist, Community Mobilizer and Social Organizer, and holds a Masters degree in journalism.

  

Tariq Zaman Khan

District Officer, Environment

City District Government, Lahore

Tariq Zaman Khan is a District Officer, Environment, in the City District Government, Lahore. He is responsible for developing policy and the execution and implementation of the Pakistan Environment Protection Act, 1997, and the Punjab Local Government Ordinance, 2001, in the Lahore district. This focuses on optimal protection of the urban environment and prevention of damage from industrial wastes, vehicular pollution and municipal waste. Before taking on the role of District Officer, Mr Khan worked as Assistant Director in the Punjab Environmental Protection Department. His key strength and experience is in implementing effective policy, running advocacy campaigns for both civil society and interest groups, and fostering public – private partnerships. Mr Khan also carries out independent research studies. Among his published reports are the Northern Areas Study on Processes and Mechanisms report and Research and Development of Northern Areas Strategy for Sustainable Development, both sponsored by IUCN. Mr Khan did his Masters in Environmental Management from the University of Nottingham. His interests include traveling to green places and playing cricket.

Mukesh Kumar

Manager, Cluster Development

Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (SMEDA), Lahore

Mukesh Kumar is Manager, Cluster Development at SMEDA in Lahore. Currently his responsibilities are studying, assessing and analyzing various industrial as well as agricultural clusters and developing and implementing various projects for sustainable growth. Before joining SMEDA in Lahore, Mr Kumar was Manager BDS at SMEDA in Karachi. There he was also involved in sales and marketing of computer hardware and software for several years during which he introduced online product sales. Mr Kumar is also a member of the Management Association of Pakistan and the Pakistan Engineering Council. His main hobbies are reading business journals and history.

  

Iftikhar Malik

Manager, Governance Program

LEAD Pakistan, Islamabad

Iftikhar Malik is Manager, Governance Program at LEAD Pakistan. His responsibilities include development of program portfolios by forging strategic alliances and partnerships with key players involved with good governance, devolution reforms and improved social services delivery under the rubric of poverty alleviation in Pakistan. Before LEAD Pakistan, Mr Malik worked with IUCN - the World Conservation Union for eight years, most recently as Manager, Abbottabad Conservation Strategy (ACS). He has contributed to the design of IUCN’s program portfolio for northern Pakistan. Mr Malik led the completion and approval of ACS; establishment of the first sustainable development fund at the district level; and development of a Capacity Development Framework for IUCN partners in NWFP. He has also facilitated establishment of the first multi-sectoral National Environment Management Center (NEMC) in NWFP under UNIDO’s Integrated Development Program for Pakistan. Mr Malik holds a Masters degree in Environmental Planning and Management from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan and has attended a range of trainings on contemporary managerial, leadership and sustainable development concepts.

 

Kazim Niaz

Political Agent, Orakzai Agency

Government of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), Orakzai Agency

 

Dr Kazim Niaz is working as a Political Agent in the government of NWFP. Previously Dr Niaz served as Project Director in Barani Area Development Program (BADP) II – a project funded by Asian Development Bank and International Fund for Agriculture Development that has poverty alleviation and improvement in the status of women as its objectives. Dr Niaz is a federal government civil servant with ten years’ experience of working with the government and two years of work experience in the non-government sector. He has worked for the International Medical Corps, Khushhali Bank and the National Rural Support Program. He has also worked in the Planning and Development Department as Chief of Section, Health and Green sectors. His areas of interest include poverty alleviation and the nexus between poverty and environment and sustainable development. He has worked on district administration reforms in Pakistan as well as the administrative framework. Presently he is the General Secretary of the NGO Sabawoon Volunteers Association, which provides quality education free of charge to deserving students, both Afghans and Pakistanis. He holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the International Development Department University, Birmingham, and another in Political Science.

 

Muhammad Ahsan Rana

Senior Program Manager

Pakistan Center for Philanthropy, Islamabad

Muhammad Ahsan Rana is Senior Program Manager at the Pakistan Center for Philanthropy (PCP). He is responsible for initiatives like certification of nonprofit organizations and research on the nature and dimensions of philanthropy. Before joining PCP in 2003, he worked with the Punjab Rural Support Program as its General Manager in the Sahiwal region. Working closely with rural communities, he was responsible for providing micro credit services. He has also served in the Government of Pakistan as a civil servant for over nine years. He has vast experience of working in the public and nonprofit sectors in Pakistan at policy formulation and implementation levels. He is particularly interested in agricultural biotechnology, food security, philanthropy for social development and micro–finance. Mr Rana is a development economist and social planner by training with a Masters degree in Economics from Islamia University, Bahawalpur, and another Masters degree in Social Planning and Development from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.

 

Hamid Sarfraz

Deputy Manager, Pakistan Environmental Program

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Islamabad

Hamid Sarfraz is Deputy Manager of the Pakistan Environmental Program at IUCN – the World Conservation Union, based in Islamabad. He is responsible for the operational management of the program. During his six-year association with IUCN, he has worked as Deputy Project Director, Northern Areas Conservation Strategy Project and Program Coordinator, IUCN Balochistan Program. Before joining IUCN in 1999, he taught social psychology, sociology of population and sociology of education at the University of Balochistan for seven years. Mr Sarfraz has also worked as a consultant for various organizations, including Government of Balochistan and BHP Minerals, Australia. Mr Sarfraz has held honorary editorial positions with various research journals. His interest and work experience ranges from research in sociology to managing environment and development initiatives. A sociologist by training, Mr Sarfraz holds an MPhil degree in sociology from the University of Balochistan. He has acquired management skills through various executive education courses like the Management Development Program from Lahore University of Management Sciences.

 

Syeda Nayab  Bukhari

Assistant Professor, School of Business and Economics

In-charge – Gender Development Center, Lahore

Syeda Nayab Bukhari is currently serving as Assistant Professor at School of Business and Economics. She is also in-charge of Gender Development Center. She has earned almost 9 years of unique experience in teaching and social development. She has done her MPhil in Media and Communications with major research on Gender and Communications and holds a Masters in Journalism, Social Enterprise Management Program and Diploma in International Affairs. Currently she is working on her PhD dissertation on Institutional Strengthening of Civil Society Organizations in Pakistan.

Ms. Bukhari is an active member of many NGOs and networks working on social development and has given consultancy and training to many organizations including Asian Productivity Organization – Japan, National Productivity Corporation – Malaysia, UNICEF, Center for Women Corporative Development, National Ministry of Women Development, Punjab Police, Punjab Rural Support Program, universities e.g. Fatima Jinnah College for Girls – Lahore, Bahauddin Zikria university – Multan, Islamia university – Bahawalpur etc.   

Ghulam Mustafa Talpur

Senior Program Officer, Water Rights

ActionAid Pakistan, Islamabad

Ghulam Mustafa Talpur is Senior Program Officer, Water Rights in ActionAid Pakistan in Islamabad. He is responsible for designing research in sustainable water resources management; for community mobilization; building water rights campaigns, and networking and advocacy for equitable distribution of natural resources. Before joining ActionAid Pakistan in 2003, Mr Talpur worked as a social organizer, data analyst and social scientist in the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in Mirpurkhas, Sindh, Pakistan, for five and a half years to facilitate the process of Participatory Irrigation Management. This experience has developed Mr Talpur’s interest in more focused research on the poverty–environment nexus, especially in the context of water resource management. His basic concerns are related to environmental degradation created by policy decisions in respect of mega water resource development projects and their impact on sustainable development. Mr Talpur is an economist by training, with a Masters degree in Sustainable International Development Program from Brandeis University, USA, and another Masters degree in Rural Development from the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Pakistan.

 

Tahira Kamal Umrani

Deputy District Health Officer for Preventive Health

District Mastung, Balochistan, Mastung

 

Dr Tahira Kamal Umrani is Deputy District Health Officer for Preventive Health, District Mastung, Balochistan. She is responsible for conducting preventive programs like the Extended Program for Immunization, the TB Control Program, Malaria Control Program, and Health Education and Awareness. The areas of her expertise include training, facilitation in field related health policy and planning, education, gender and environment. Previously she worked as Emergency Medical Officer with World Health Organization. She has done her Masters in Public Health from the Health Services Academy, Islamabad.
