LEAD Pakistan teamed up with the Punjab Resource Mobilization Program (PRMP) to organize a Focal Persons Workshop on “Climate Change: Mainstreaming Mitigation and Adaptation for Sustainable Development” on January 26, 2008 at Bhurban, Pakistan. The objective of this workshop was to raise awareness of climate change issues among stakeholders and to enhance the ability for framing development strategies in line with existing climate change knowledge.

2 - Changing Climates: Pakistan’s Options for Adaptation and Mitigation

BHC Consultation - Lahore, Pakistan

February 2008
 

LEAD Pakistan partnered with the British High Commission (BHC) to conduct a scoping study on Pakistan’s Options for Adaptation to and Mitigation of Climate Change Effects. Aiming to generate data and discussion for the scoping study, LEAD held consultations with stakeholders from government, media, industry, academia and civil society in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Islamabad. 

The consultation in Lahore on “Changing Climates: Pakistan’s Options for Adaptation and Mitigation” was held on February 13, 2008.

BHC Consultation - Karachi, Pakistan

LEAD Pakistan partnered with the British High Commission (BHC) to conduct a scoping study on Pakistan’s Options for Adaptation to and Mitigation of Climate Change Effects. For this purpose, a series of consultations were conducted in four major cities of Pakistan. 

The consultation in Karachi on “Changing Climates: Pakistan’s Options for Adaptation and Mitigation” was held on February 14, 2008 and hosted by Pakistan State Oil (PSO). The consultation highlighted linkages with key industrial stakeholders.

5 - Changing Climates: Pakistan’s Options for Adaptation and Mitigation

BHC Consultation - Islamabad, Pakistan

March 2008 
 

LEAD Pakistan partnered with the British High Commission (BHC) to conduct a scoping study on Pakistan’s Options for Adaptation to and Mitigation of Climate Change Effects to generate data and discussion for the scoping study, LEAD Pakistan held consultations with stakeholders from government, media, industry, academia and civil society in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar. 

The discussion in Islamabad was a culmination of aforementioned consultations, designed to collate findings and recommendations from the previous events, for review and discussion. The consultation in Islamabad on “Changing Climates: Pakistan’s Options for Adaptation and Mitigation” was held on March 13, 2008 at the Marriott Hotel.

LEAD Pakistan organized a lecture by Dr. Adil Najam on “Environment, Development and Security: The Case of Climate Change” on March 31, 2008 in Islamabad.

The talk was attended by government officials, the civil society, academia, students and leading corporations. The panel included the Chairperson, Dr. Amir Mohammad, Rector, FAST National University, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, National Program Director/CEO, LEAD Pakistan and Dr. Adil Najam, Professor at the Boston University, USA.

8 - Climate Change: The Impact on Biodiversity and Agriculture

On the occasion of the World Biodiversity Day, LEAD Pakistan organized a roundtable on Climate Change: The Impact on Biodiversity and Agriculture. This was organized in collaboration with UNESCO, UNDP, the Ministry of Environment and the Planning Commission (Government of Pakistan) and was widely attended by a cross section of development practitioners from environmental and biodiversity conservation organisations, policy makers, officials from the Ministry of Environment, the Planning Commission, the National Highways Authority, academia as well as students. 

The panelists included senior governmental officials and policy makers such as Mr. Bashir Ahmad Wani (Inspector General Forests, Ministry of Environment), Dr. Kauser Abdullah (Member, Planning Commission, Government of Pakistan), Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan (International Islamic University, Islamabad), Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez (Country Director, United Nations Development Programme, Pakistan) and Mr. Jorge Sequeira (Country Director, UNESCO, Pakistan). Mr. Mohammad Farah (Country Director, FAO, Pakistan) the discussant for the roundtable while Mr. Ali Tauqeer Sheikh (CEO/National Programme Director, LEAD Pakistan) chaired the roundtable.

9 - Climate Change: Adaptation Challenges in OIC Countries

June 30 – July 05, 2008

Islamabad, Pakistan


A six days conference on the issue of climate change was held in Islamabad, Pakistan from June 30th to July 5th, 2008.It was attended by policy-makers, public and private sector professionals, activists and students from OIC member countries including Bangladesh, China, Nigeria and Tunisia.

The conference resource persons were a mix of renowned national and international experts working on cutting-edge of climate change issues for research and adaptation planning. This gave participants ample opportunities to share country-specific issues, challenges and responses to climate change

The main objectives of this 6 day event were:

  1. Providing in-depth knowledge of multi-lateral environmental agreements (MEAs);

  2. Deepening the understanding of climate change in a broad sustainable development and political economy context;

  3. Identifying specific CC challenges, issues and opportunities facing OIC members

  4. Analyzing possible adaptation and mitigation strategies

10 - Corporate Summit on Climate Change

February 2009

LEAD Pakistan is organizing – for the first time in Pakistan – a Corporate Summit on Climate Change in February 2009 in Karachi, Pakistan. The Corporate Summit, an exclusive event aimed at increasing the involvement of corporations in Pakistan on the crucial issue of climate change, will provide a unique opportunity to discuss climate change concerns by providing a common platform to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices. This will entail future actions that encourage climate friendly business practices and measures.

 

The Summit will bring together corporate leaders who are concerned about climate change and its impacts. This includes CEOs, Managing Directors, General Managers, Environmentalists, and Corporate Social Responsibility specialists, among others.
