Climate Change and LEAD Pakistan
|
Climate Change is a rapidly unfolding challenge of
catastrophic global, regional and national proportions.
Pakistan will be affected by the impacts far more seriously
than is generally recognized by the policy makers and
opinion leaders.
According to scientific assessments of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the global
world temperature increased by 0.6˚C
over the last century and is forecasted to further amplify,
between 1.4 to 5.8˚C, before the
present century ends.
LEAD
Pakistan has been working on the promotion of
environmentally sensitive development since 1997 and has
recently initiated a process of
capacity building and program planning in
Climate Change (CC) in Pakistan. LEAD
firmly believes that serious and immediate actions need to
be taken by various stakeholders to fully understand and
respond to the grave impacts of climate change, requiring a
realignment of Pakistan’s commitment towards the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs). It is imperative that the
challenges posed by global warming and climate change are
better understood and preparations are undertaken for a coherent and long-term response in both realms - adaptation
measures and mitigation strategies – at all tiers of
society.
In collaboration with its family of LEAD
programs across the global LEAD Network, LEAD Pakistan is in
the process of designing a multi-year program to help
Pakistan tackle the looming challenge of Climate Change.
Objectives
The core objectives and building blocks of LEAD Pakistan’s Climate
Change Program are:
-
Research and initiating policy engagement;
-
Developing capacity building and training programs for
increased stakeholder engagement;
-
Creating and managing partnerships and multi-stakeholder
networks;
-
Designing for Implementing mitigation and adaptation
models and frameworks.
