Training Sessions
The training sessions for Cohort 12 started
according to scheduled time frame and topics
announced prior to their selection.
Orientation Training Session (OTS)
(Duration: Five Days)
The Orientation Session for Cohort 12 took
place in February and focused on
Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs).
The different sessions linked together
environmental issues at different levels,
local, national as well as global in the
larger context of sustainable development.
The faculty represented both leading experts
in their fields as well as several LEAD
fellows. This session was specifically
designed to address a whole range of
environmental concerns, including climate
change (UNFCCC), bio-diversity (Convention
on Biological Diversity), wetlands (RAMSAR
Wetlands Convention), desertification
(United Nations Convention to Combat
Desertification), and the Trade in
Endangered Species. The field visit to Kalar
Kahar Lake, and then to Khabbeki Lake and
the Ucchali Lake, as part of the training,
aimed at providing a first hand experience
of biodiversity concerns at the local level
to the participants. It also gave an
opportunity to the Associates to link local
realities with the larger picture as
discussed in the conceptual sessions that
preceded the visit.
Orientation
Session (Duration: Five Days)
Distance Learning Course( 1 DLT) ( Duration:
1 ˝ month)
Distance learning course was introduced for
the first time as a training session for the
LDP. The Cohort 12 participated in a 1 ˝
month-long online course on Project Proposal
Writing beginning in February and ending in
March. This broad-based skill module
introduced the participants to the
techniques for writing persuasive project
proposals. The course was dynamically
structured with interactive discussion
board, one-to-one interactions with the
mentor and numerous practical assignments
and activities.

(Duration: six weeks)
First National Training Session (1 NTS)
(Duration: 5 days)
The first training session on ‘Alternative
Energy and Business Opportunity’ was
organized in April. Introducing a cutting
edge global issue, this session was designed
with the objective to deliberate and review
action and progress towards extended energy
access and security by key players in energy
sector especially in the context of
Pakistan. The session was opened to
non-cohorts to enrich the training and
extend outreach and awareness on an
important yet unchallenged issue. Key
institutions working in energy sector both
in the government as well as private sector
were reached out to. ENERCON collaborated
with LEAD for organizing the session. Their
support especially focused on extending
outreach by inviting media for participation
and coverage of the event. Keynote speakers
included the ENERCON Managing Director,
Minister for State for Environment, and Ex-WAPDA
Chairman. Different panels had
representation from energy players
including, AEDB, NEPRA, PCRET etc. The field
visit included a visit to the PCRET
laboratories and a small hydro dam where the
Associates were exposed to different
alternative energy options being developed
and explored by the government.
First
National Training Sessions
Second National Training Session (2 NTS)
(Duration: 5 days)
The second training session on Alleviating
Poverty Profitably: Meeting the MDGs with
Social Enterprises: was held in May. This
training course explored the role and
contribution of social enterprises, micro
finance institutions, and small business in
meeting the challenges of poverty
alleviation, sustainable livelihood, and
empowerment of the un-reached and
disadvantaged groups. The course brought
together leading experts, practitioners,
civil society leaders and trendsetters in
their respective fields to share
perspective, views and experiences. For an
exposure visit, the Associates visited
Nathia gali, a project area where a micro
finance scheme to support the production of
energy efficient stoves was undertaken by
Sungi Development Foundation. The field
visit wove together two thematic focus areas
as highlighted in the first and the second
training session.
Second
National Training Sessions
Regional Training Session (RTS) (Duration: 5
Days)
Each class of LDP participates in two
international training sessions for added
exposure and opportunity to network with
other MPs. The Regional Training Session or
RTS takes place at the regional level with
other MPs in the region coming together on a
common theme. The Associates which complete
all graduating requirements including
participation in in-country sessions as well
as submission of LAPs are invited to join
for the RTS. Building on the national
sessions, the focus for the RTS this time,
is chosen to be the urban environmental
management in the context of mega cities.
The overall objectives of this training
program are to provide knowledge on various
aspects of good governance in urban
environment management and to equip
participants with framework, vision, and
strategies for planning and managing good
urban environment governance. The training
will focus on Mega Cities: Good Governance
in Urban Environmental Management.
Regional
Training Session
International Training Session: ITS
(Duration:6 days)
The second international training session
offered to the Cohorts is the International
training session (ITS) which is the
culmination of the LDP and offers a larger
forum consisting of all current cohorts in
the MPs. The theme for this training session
is collectively decided among MPs ahead of
the cohort selection. This way, the
in-country sessions which are conceptualized
and planned independently, can still be
woven around a common theme. Associates
invited to participate in the ITS are
selected as best among their class in terms
of the quality of their participation in the
previous training sessions, the timely
submission and quality of their LAPs and
their overall performance in the LDP. This
year the theme for ITS is the global cutting
edge issue of Climate Change and will be
hosted by Indonesia. Preparation for ITS is
underway.
Second Distance Learning Course: (2 DLT) (
Duration:22 days)
This course on conflict resolution in the
context of environment will be offered in
October.
