Abdul Qadir Rafiq United Nations Development Program-Pakistan (UNDP) Mr. Rafiq holds a Masters degree in Irrigation & Drainage from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Currently, Mr. Rafiq is currently working as a Program Officer in the Global Environment Facility unit of the United Nations Development Program Pakistan (UNDP-Pakistan). Prior to joining UNDP, he was working as a consultant with the National Engineering Services of Pakistan (NESPAK). Mr. Rafiq has been involved in the planning and designing of the Dera Ghazi Khan Integrated Drainage and Irrigation Project, the Drainage Sector Environmental Assessment Study, the National Drainage Program and the Muzaffargarh Canal Command Project.
Ali Tauqeer Sheikh LEAD Pakistan Mr. Ali Tauqeer Sheikh is the founding National Program Director of LEAD Pakistan since its inception in 1996. He specializes in institutional development, institutional reforms and in change management. He has vast experience in training and facilitating multi-disciplinary expert groups on policy planning, leadership development and conflict management. Mr Sheikh has studied at Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad, Australian National University, Canberra, and University of Miami, Florida, from where he obtained Master’s degrees in International Relations and Strategic Studies. He has been a Fellow at the Institute of Soviet and East European Studies (ISEES) Miami; the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) in London and the Rockefeller Foundation in New York. He has worked as Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad and served as Editor of the quarterly journal, Strategic Studies. He has written extensively on issues of conflict resolution, international negotiations and international treaties in several professional journals as well as contributed to leading newspapers in the US, UK and Pakistan. He has contributed chapters to several books. Mr Sheikh serves on the Board of several nonprofit organizations and is member of various commissions and national committees dealing with environment and sustainable. Mr Sheikh also serves on the Board of United Nations’ Global Compact in Pakistan. He has been interviewed on several occasions by the national and foreign media on a range of environment and sustainable development issues.
Amjad Virk Ministry of Environment Dr. Amjad T. Virk possesses a diverse professional background from a field wildlife biologist to a manager. He is one of the few trained wildlife biologists in the country. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Wildlife Biology from the University of Montana, USA. His experience of working in both government and NGO sector has helped him to diversify his knowledge base in conservation biology. He strongly believes in participatory approaches and involvement of local communities in conservation efforts. His four years of experience on working with the rural communities of Northern Areas remained to be an inspiring work of his career for promoting community-based conservation in Northern Areas of Pakistan. The focus of his doctoral research was on understanding social, economic and biological aspects for conserving wild species. His aim is to devote himself for the conservation of nature and to contribute toward knowledge of biological diversity. He has worked with many leading professionals, mangers and community representatives in diverse settings. Dr. Virk has considerable experience in developing linkages among communities, NGOs and public sector agencies. He is also familiar with coordinating activities among multiple partners and diverse stakeholders in conservation and development projects. He has represented Pakistan at many international meetings, workshops, and conferences. Dr. Virk is presently working as a Project Manager, “Sustainable Land Management Project to Combat Desertification in Pakistan” funded by the GEF-UNDP and being implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Government of Pakistan.
Ghulam Mohammad Arif Consultants, ADB Dr. G. M Arif is currently working as Poverty Reduction Specialist, ADB. Dr. Arif has gained extensive training in Poverty Monitoring and Evaluation, from Quebec and Community Based Monitoring System (CBMS), Hanoi, Vietnam. His research work is mostly related to issues dealing with poverty. Some of his recent researches have been on Child Health and Poverty in Pakistan, Poverty Targeting Efficiency of Zakat, Micro-finance and Lady Health Workers in Pakistan,, Bonded Labour in Agriculture: A Rapid Assessment in Punjab and North West Frontier Province, Pakistan and Poverty Dynamics in Pakistan: Evidence from the two Panel Household Surveys, in Pakistan. He has been an active participants in many policy forums including Convener of the Poverty Thematic Group for MDG Report 2005 constituted by the Planning Commission, Government of Pakistan. Co-convener of the Poverty Group for the 5th Plan (Medium Development Framework 2006-11), constituted by the Planning Commission, Government of Pakistan. Dr. Arif hold a PhD in Demography from the Australian National University, Canberra.
Gul Najam Jamy IUCN Mr. Gul Najam Jamy is currently designated as Head, IUCNP Islamabad Program Office & Manager PEP. His core area of responsibility involves the overall management and coordination of IUCN Pakistan’s Program in Pakistan. Focus is on development and implementation of a relevant and needs-based program of work in the country. Organizational M&E function reports to this position. In terms of areas of responsibility, this is the senior most position after the Country Representative. Mr. Jamy has taken part in innumerable trainings, seminars and conferences at national and international level. Mr. Jamy holds a Masters in Business Administration and Engineering.
Hammad Naqi Khan World Wide Fund for Nature‑Pakistan (WWF) Mr Khan works as Director of Environmental Pollution at WWF Pakistan. His responsibilities include the preparation, implementation, and supervision of field-based projects which address major environmental issues. He is responsible too for the review of legislation, environmental policies, and environmental impact assessment reports, as well as for the management of training programs for the corporate sector, curriculum development, and the development of informative and educational materials on local and global pollution issues for the print and electronic media. Mr. Khan co-authored the Environmental Guide Book, and compiled and co-edited WWF-Pakistan’s EMAS Resource Book. He has also written articles on environment and pollution issues in newspapers and magazines. Prior to joining the WWF, he worked for seven years with the Irrigation and Power Department, Government of Punjab. He holds a Masters in Water Resources Technology and Management from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Jawad Hassan Hassan & Hassan Advocates Jawad Hassan is a Partner at Hassan and Hassan (Advocates), Lahore and specializes in litigation, commercial, corporate, banking, labour work. He holds LL.M from Pace University, New York, M.A. in Economics and LL..B from Punjab University, Lahore and a graduate diploma in accounting from the University of West-minister, London. His various judgments of High Courts have been reported in the law journals/digests in Pakistan. He is a member of various Commissions, Committees and Boards of the organizations, NGOs, institutions, bar associations and the chambers of commerce. Mr. Hassan has been involved with the Government of Pakistan and Punjab in drafting certain laws, rules and regulations. Mr. Hassan is a Visiting Lecturer at the Punjab University, Kinnaird College, LUMS and the Dr. Parvez Hassan Environmental Law Center. He was also a Resource Person at the three (3) Capacity Building Workshops for the Officers of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan at LUMS, 2000 and 2001, (3) Training Workshops for the Civil Judges of the Sindh organized by the Sindh High Court in collaboration with the Sindh EPA, IUCN, LEAD and WWF in May 2003 and the four (4) Zonal Workshops for the Civil Judges of the NWFP organized by the Peshawar High Court in collaboration with the NWFP, EPA and the IUCN in July 2001 and at the Civil Services Academy and NIPA from 1998-2002. Mr. Hassan’s various researched articles/papers have been published in USA, UK, Netherlands, Australia and Pakistan which were presented in various international conferences.
Jawed Ali Khan Ministry of Environment Mr. Jawed Ali Khan is the former Director General of the Ministry of Environment. He has graduated in Environmental Planning from Asian Institute of Technology and done Post Graduate Diplomas in Environmental Management as a UNEP Fellow from Tufts University, Boston-USA, in Risk Management from the Risk Centre, Sweden and in Housing Planning and Building from BIE, the Netherlands. Mr. Khan has more than 20 years standing in the field of environment. He has served as a Chairman of the Technical Working Group of the UN Convention- Basel Convention on Trans-boundary Hazardous Waste and their Disposal from 1999-2003. He is the current Vice President of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change. He has remained National focal points for MEAs for the Government of Pakistan.
Kalimullah Sherazi Ministry of Environment Mr. Kalimullah Shirazi is currently working as Deputy Secretary (land & Water), Ministry of Environment. Mr. sherazi has served as member of UNDP,s evaluation/formulation Mission titled maintaining biodiversity in Pakistan with rural community development, he has also served as a member of UNDP’s project formulation mission Mountain Areas Conservancy Project (MACP) and was also involved in Protected Areas Management Project (PAMP). He has been actively involved in the preparation and approval of Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) and also in the preparation of National Action Programme to Combat Desertification. Mr. Sherazi has several publications to his credits which, mostly focus on wildlife and threatened species of Pakistan. Mr. Sherazi holds a Masters in Zoology and has completed several courses in Wildlife Conservation, Management, Natural Environment and Systematic study as well as Ecology of Waterfowls and Mammals.
M. Nazir Hussain Ministry of Foreign Affaires Mr. Nazir Hussain is currently working as a Director General (Disarmament), Ministry of Environment. His core responsibilities include; implementation of International instruments for nuclear terrorism, issues related to nuclear, biological and chemical weapons and missiles, coordination with national and international stakeholders and development and implementation of export controls for sensitive technologies and materials. Mr. Hussain has been involved with the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW) and has taken part in various administrative and political assignments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Pakistan Mission abroad. Mr. Hussain holds a Masters in Economics and Engineering.
Murtaza Malik NEAP-SP Dr Murtaza Malik is Sub-Program Manager, Policy Co-ordination and Environmental Governance, NEAP-SP. Previously he worked as Program Executive with GTZ (German Agency for Technical Cooperation), where he worked on several research projects dealing with anaerobic digestion and sewage treatment methods. Earlier, he worked as Deputy Director in the NWFP-Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Peshawar. There his responsibilities included giving technical advice on issues like solid waste management and wastewater treatment and compliance with National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS). Dr Malik has also worked as Project Manager of a World Bank-funded and EPA-implemented project, “Protection of River Swat”. He has presented, participated in, and organized workshops regarding pollution control, sewage treatment, and other related issues. He is a member of several national and international organizations and has published twelve papers in international journals and conference proceedings. His paper won first prize in the British Chartered Institution of Water and Environment Management’s (CIWEM) “Young Authors Competition-1996”. Dr. Malik received his PhD in Wastewater Treatment and his Masters degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Newcastle. He also holds a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar.
Shafaq Masud LEAD Pakistan Ms. Shafaq Masud is working as a Young Professional Officer and is providing assistance in Cohort Trainings. She joined LEAD Pakistan as an intern and her sphere of responsibilities were to assist in Module development and research for EMS case studies. Ms. Masud holds a Masters’ in Environmental Sciences from Fatima Jinnah Women University. Earlier she was appointed as a Teaching Assistant at the university and was assisting in designing and formulating formal assignments, quizzes mid and final term papers covering subjects relating to Environmental Microbiology, Bioremediation and Biodegradation, Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Chemistry.
Syed Nadeem Bukhari United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Mr Bukhari works for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)’s Local Initiative Facility for Urban Environment (LIFE) and Global Environment Facility (GEF)-Small Grants Program as a Program Monitoring Officer. He is responsible for coordinating and implementing a monitoring system for tracking the technical and financial performance of projects. He also guides CBOs/NGOs in improving project implementation. He previously worked for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-Pakistan as Program Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, during which time he volunteered his services in a bear-baiting survey. Mr Bukhari has organized conferences and workshops on the environment. He holds a Masters in Forestry from the Pakistan Forest Institute, Peshawar.
Tanvir Mahmud Consultant, UNEP Mr. Tanvir Mahmud has been assisting the Ozone Cell Ministry of Environment Government of Pakistan for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol in Pakistan since the year 2000 working as a Technical Support Consultant and Senior National Expert on behalf of UNDP and UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization). At present he is working as a Consultant for the Afghanistan Ozone Program being implemented by UNEP (United Nations Environment Program). Mr. Mahmud holds a BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Peshawar University and MS degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech. University USA. He has over 30 years of professional work experience in the field of Power Engineering, Development Finance and Environment. His work experience includes working for international consultants such as Preece Cardew and Rider and multinational companies like the Arabian American Oil Company. He has vast experience of interacting with international agencies such as the World Bank, ADB and multinationals like General Electric Westinghouse and Mitsubishi Corporation. He was a senior executive at the Regional Development Finance Corporation and also worked briefly as Deputy Chief at the Planning Division Government of Pakistan. He represented Pakistan at the Meeting of the Parties of the Montreal Protocol held at Montreal in March 2004 and also served as a Resource person for the UNEP Regional Office for Asia and Pacific on the “Country Ownership concept for the implementation of the Montreal Protocol” South Asia conference held at Agra India in April 2004. |
