Bio-Sketch of Dr. Adil Najam

Dr. Adil Najam holds the Frederick S. Pardee Endowed Chair for Global Public Policy at Boston Univeristy, where he is also a Professor of International Relations, a Professor of Geography and the Environment, and the Director of the Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future. He is also a Visiting Professor of Negotiation and Diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tufts Univeristy.

Prof. Najam was part of the team of IPCC scientists awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their work in advancing the public understanding of climate change science. He served as a Lead Author for the Third and Fourth Assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), focusing on the relationship between climate and development. His research and teaching spans a variety of topics all related to sustainable development policy for developing countries, especially focusing on issues of climate change, international trade, global governance, and human security.

Prof. Najam has published widely, written over 100 scholarly papers and book chapters, and his recent books include: Trade and Environment: Visions from the South (2007); Trade and Environment Negotiations: A Resource book (2007); Pakistanis in America: Portrait of a Giving Community (2006); Global Environmental Governance (2006); Environment, Development and Human Security: Perspectives from South Asia (2003); and Civic Entrepreneurship (2002).  He has frequently served as a consultant and advisor to various international organizations and nongovernmental organizations, and to governments.

Prof. Najam holds two Masters and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a Specialization in Negotiation from the Program on Negotiation at the Harvard Law School, and an engineering degree from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Pakistan.  He is a past winner of MIT’s Goodwin Medal for Effective Teaching, the Fletcher School Paddock Teaching Award, and the Stein Rokan Award of the International Political Science Association, the ARNOVA Emerging Scholar Award, and the Pakistan Television Medal for Outstanding Achievement.  He serves on the Boards of the Pakistan Institute for Environment-Development Action Research (PIEDAR), the Centre for Global Studies at the University of Victoria, and the Institute for Global Leadership, and the Global Development and Environment Institute at Tufts University.  He is also a Visiting Fellow at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), Pakistan, and an Associate of the International Institute for Sustainable Development’s (IISD), Canada.

Prof. Najam also serves on the editorial boards of various scholarly publications including, Global Governance, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, The Journal of Ecological Economics, Yearbook of International Co-operation on Environment and Development, Annual Editions: Environment and topic editor on sustainable development for The Encyclopedia of Earth.  He was an original member of the President of Pakistan’s Special Task Force on Human Development (2001) and served with the President of Pakistan’s Commission on Higher Education (2002). He is highly sought by the international media on issues related to global development, South Asia affairs, and the politics of the Muslim world.
